Sri Vijaya Puram, May 8: Seven economically weaker families in the Modern Village area under Kanyapuram Gram Panchayat in South Andaman have received land licences under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), following completion of the land allotment and survey process initiated by the district administration.
The distribution was carried out under the direction of the Deputy Commissioner of South Andaman as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen rural housing support for landless and needy families in the region.
Officials said the initiative was implemented through the coordination of Kanyapuram Gram Panchayat, where identified beneficiaries were formally allotted land parcels after the completion of demarcation and verification procedures.

The process involved field-level land survey and documentation carried out in the presence of the Patwari, Surveyor and Village Level Worker (VLW). Authorities handed over the allotted plots to seven beneficiary families after completion of the official formalities.
Pradhan P. Abdul Basheer of Kanyapuram Gram Panchayat supervised the local implementation of the initiative and coordinated with revenue officials during the allotment process.
Beneficiaries expressed relief after receiving the land licences, stating that the allotment would help them move closer to securing permanent housing under the central housing scheme. Several families said the support would reduce long-standing uncertainty regarding shelter and land ownership.
Officials associated with the programme stated that the initiative forms part of the broader implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana in rural areas of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, aimed at improving housing access for economically weaker households.
According to local authorities, multiple houses sanctioned under the scheme in the area have already been completed, while construction work on nearly ten additional houses remains underway.
The administration said efforts are continuing to identify more eligible beneficiaries requiring land and housing assistance under the programme. Local authorities are also carrying out verification and assessment procedures for future allotments in the Panchayat area.
The PMAY scheme focuses on providing permanent housing support to vulnerable rural families through land allocation and financial assistance for house construction. Officials said coordinated efforts between Panchayati Raj institutions and revenue authorities remain essential for timely implementation of housing projects in rural areas.
Authorities further noted that land allotment and housing support initiatives are expected to contribute to improving living conditions and strengthening social security for low-income families in South Andaman.
