Hut Bay hosted a special training programme for the Onge Tribe of Dugong Creek on June 14, organised by the Department of Fisheries with support from the Marine Product Export Development Authority (MPEDA) and the AAJVS. Thirty members of the Onge community participated in the session, aimed at enhancing their knowledge of hygienic fish handling, consumption benefits, and modern fishing practices.
The initiative focused on improving dietary habits, ensuring food safety, and introducing better sanitation methods in fish storage and processing. Training also included the screening of educational videos on fishing techniques and bacterial contamination prevention, helping participants better understand the health benefits and commercial aspects of fisheries.
Hands-on learning and aid distribution
A practical session involved community participation in repairing old nets and learning the proper use of cast nets. Aid materials such as fish baskets, gloves, water containers, and t-shirts were distributed to the trainees. Fisheries officers highlighted the nutritional value of marine resources in the Andaman Islands and the importance of correct gear usage for improved catch.
The session served as both an educational and capacity-building event, building interest in future aquaculture-based livelihoods within the community. This aligns with broader state efforts to integrate tribal groups into sustainable livelihood programmes without disrupting traditional lifestyles.
Demand for future training and support
Community leaders expressed appreciation for the effort and requested more sessions focused on fisheries and aquaculture. The local Tribal Welfare Officer also placed a demand for the supply of fishing boats and proposed the launch of an aquaculture demonstration project involving the community.
The programme concluded with certificate distribution and a vote of thanks by the Onge community, marking a step forward in inclusive development efforts aimed at uplifting indigenous populations through practical skill training.
