Missed The Deadline? Students Get One More Chance

The Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS) has extended the deadline for online registration to the All-India Lateral Entry Selection Test (LEST) for admission into Classes IX and XI for the academic session 2026-27. Students now have until October 7 to submit their applications, providing additional time for aspirants across the country, including those in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, to secure their chance of joining Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs).

The extension follows high interest from students and parents seeking entry into the JNV system, which is known for its focus on quality education, rural outreach, and merit-based selection. Originally opened on July 25, the online registration window had been set to close earlier, but NVS decided to allow more time for applications, recognising the demand and ensuring inclusivity.

The LEST serves as a gateway for filling vacant seats in Classes IX and XI across JNVs. These institutions, run by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, have earned a reputation for academic excellence and holistic development. They primarily cater to talented students from rural areas, offering free residential schooling that combines modern curricula with opportunities in sports, culture, and co-curricular activities.

For the 2026-27 academic session, the selection test for both classes has been scheduled for February 7, 2026. Applicants are required to register online via the official NVS website (www.navodaya.gov.in). Direct application links are also available: https://cbseitms.nic.in/2025/nvsxi_11 for Class XI and https://cbseitms.nic.in/2025/nvsix_9 for Class IX. The online platform ensures easy access for candidates and eliminates the need for offline submissions.

The test itself is designed to assess a student’s aptitude in core subjects and general intelligence, ensuring that selection is merit-based and transparent. By opening admissions through lateral entry, JNVs provide opportunities to students who may have missed out on entry at the Class VI level but demonstrate potential at higher stages.

In the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, JNVs play a particularly significant role in expanding educational opportunities. Given the geographical constraints and limited options for quality residential schooling, JNVs have emerged as important centres of learning.

The extension of the registration deadline is likely to benefit students in remote areas who may require additional time to complete the online process due to connectivity issues or lack of access to information. With the exam date set well in advance, students also have ample time to prepare and focus on areas tested in the selection process.

Each JNV is mandated to draw at least 75 percent of its intake from rural areas, ensuring equitable access. Students admitted through LEST gain the same benefits as those who enter at earlier levels, including free education, boarding, and exposure to a wide spectrum of academic and extracurricular opportunities.

The extension of the LEST 2026 registration deadline underlines NVS’s commitment to inclusivity and access in education. With the test scheduled for February 2026, students now have a clear timeline to prepare and aim for a place in one of India’s most prestigious school networks. For many, admission into a JNV represents not just an academic opportunity but also a pathway to holistic growth and future success.
