On October 8, 2025, a Fishermen Watch Group (FWG) meeting for North and Middle Andaman Districts was conducted virtually under the chairmanship of Sindhu Pillai A., IPS, Inspector General of Police (Law & Order). The meeting was attended by Shweta K. Sugathan, IPS, Superintendent of Police (District) N&MA, Chandan G.S, DANIPS, SDPO Rangat, Ankesh Yadav, DANIPS, SDPO Diglipur, Tapan Kr. Mondal, Assistant Director of Fisheries, along with SHOs from N&MA District, PMF unit in-charges, and fishermen representing communities across the districts.
During the session, fishermen raised multiple operational and administrative concerns impacting their livelihoods. Issues highlighted included illegal fishing activities by trawlers, the absence of floating jetties and ice plants, and gaps in coordination with enforcement agencies. Participants also addressed procedural difficulties and other obstacles affecting daily fishing operations.
Chairperson Sindhu Pillai A. acknowledged the challenges faced by the fishing community and assured that all matters under the jurisdiction of the Police Department would be addressed promptly. Concerns requiring administrative intervention were noted for follow-up with relevant authorities to ensure timely resolution. The session emphasized the importance of ongoing collaboration between law enforcement agencies and the fishing community to maintain operational efficiency and safety at sea.
The chairperson stressed the critical role of community vigilance in upholding law and order. Fishermen and residents were urged to report any information related to criminal activity, drug abuse, or other illegal practices. Pillai highlighted that timely reporting by community members strengthens the overall safety and security of residents both on land and at sea.
Authorities advised participants that credible information regarding crimes or illegal activities could be submitted at the nearest police station or via dedicated helpline numbers 100, 112, and 03192-273344. Confidentiality of informants will be strictly maintained, and individuals providing actionable intelligence may be rewarded as appropriate.
The virtual meeting reflected a continued effort by law enforcement to address operational challenges and safeguard the welfare of the fishing community in North and Middle Andaman. By providing a platform for direct interaction between fishermen and authorities, the FWG meeting reinforced the importance of community engagement, prompt grievance redressal, and collective responsibility in ensuring the safety and well-being of residents.
This session is part of the broader strategy to strengthen communication and coordination between the Police Department and fishing communities, addressing both law enforcement and administrative concerns, while fostering cooperation to resolve ongoing challenges effectively.
