The Bharatiya Janata Party is set to formally begin the process of electing its next national president on Monday, with BJP National Working President Nitin Nabin scheduled to file his nomination at the party headquarters in New Delhi. The nomination filing is expected to draw significant attention within political circles, as senior leaders from across the country are likely to converge on the national capital for the occasion.
Party sources indicated that the event is likely to see the presence of several BJP Chief Ministers, state unit presidents, Members of Parliament and other senior functionaries, reflecting the organisational importance attached to the leadership transition. The gathering is also being viewed as a public display of unity and cohesion within the party ahead of the formal election process.
According to the election programme released by the BJP’s National Returning Officer and Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament K. Laxman, nominations for the post of national president can be submitted between 2 pm and 4 pm on Monday. The entire election process, including filing, scrutiny and any subsequent voting, is scheduled to take place at the party headquarters in New Delhi.
As per the notified schedule, scrutiny of nomination papers will be conducted shortly after the filing window closes, between 4 pm and 5 pm. Candidates will be allowed to withdraw their nominations between 5 pm and 6 pm. In the event that more than one valid nomination remains after the withdrawal period, polling will be held on January 20. The official announcement of the new BJP national president is slated for the same day.
While announcing the election timeline earlier, K. Laxman clarified that polling would be conducted only if required, indicating the possibility of an uncontested election depending on the number of valid nominations received. The BJP national president is elected through an electoral college comprising representatives from the party’s national council as well as state councils.
The party constitution specifies eligibility criteria for candidates seeking the top organisational post. A nominee must be proposed by at least 20 members of a state’s electoral college. In addition, the candidate must have completed a minimum of four terms as an active party member and possess at least 15 years of uninterrupted membership in the BJP.
The post of BJP national president is currently held by Union Minister J.P. Nadda, who assumed the role of National Working President in June 2019 and was later elected unopposed as the party’s national president in January 2020, succeeding Amit Shah.
Nitin Nabin is widely regarded as a prominent and influential BJP leader from Bihar, with strong organisational and grassroots credentials in the state. A native of Patna, he is the son of the late Nabin Kishore Prasad Sinha, a senior BJP leader and former MLA. Following his father’s untimely demise, Nabin entered active politics and gradually established his own identity within the party through sustained engagement at the grassroots level.
He has represented the Bankipur Assembly constituency in Patna and is considered one of the BJP’s dependable leaders in Bihar. His electoral record includes victories in four consecutive Assembly elections in 2010, 2015, 2020 and 2025. His political career began with a by-election win in 2006, marking his entry into the Bihar Legislative Assembly.
In the most recent Assembly elections, Nabin secured a decisive victory from Bankipur, defeating his nearest rival by a margin exceeding 51,000 votes. His repeated electoral successes have contributed to his growing stature within the party organisation, as the BJP moves into the next phase of its national leadership transition.
