Andaman Police Training School Upgraded as Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Institute

The Police Training School (PTS) at Prothrapur was formally renamed and inaugurated as the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Police Training Institute on 12 March, marking a major step toward strengthening professional policing and institutional capacity in the islands.

The ceremony took place at the Conference Hall of Lok Niwas in Sri Vijaya Puram, where Admiral D. K. Joshi, Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Vice-Chairman of the Islands Development Agency, inaugurated the upgraded institution. The event brought together senior officials of the administration and the police department, including Chief Secretary Chandra Bhushan Kumar and Director General of Police Hargobinder Singh Dhaliwal.

The renaming of the institution honours the legacy of freedom fighter Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, whose leadership and commitment to national service continue to inspire public institutions across the country. Officials said the newly designated institute will function as a premier centre for professional police training in the islands, with a focus on building a disciplined, modern, and service-oriented police force.

The institute currently provides basic training to newly recruited constables and technical personnel within the Andaman and Nicobar Police. With the expansion of infrastructure and improved utilisation of available resources, the training mandate will now extend to include programmes for newly recruited Sub-Inspectors as well as promotional courses for personnel elevated to the rank of Assistant Sub-Inspectors.

Officials said the institute will also host practical and refresher training programmes for officers of the Delhi, Andaman and Nicobar Islands Police Service serving in the territory. In addition, probationers of the Indian Police Service undergoing field attachments in the islands will receive specialised training at the facility.

The expanded role is expected to strengthen the operational capabilities of the police force in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands while aligning local training standards with national policing requirements. Authorities said the development places the institute among the important police training institutions contributing to professional skill development within the policing system.

The institute campus has been equipped with several modern training facilities designed to support advanced and technology-driven learning. These include smart classrooms, computer laboratories, language laboratories, and a well-stocked library intended to support both theoretical and practical instruction.

Physical training and operational readiness will be supported by a modern gymnasium, a firing range, and a firearm training simulator. The campus also includes large parade grounds and sports facilities that allow trainees to participate in drills and physical training exercises.

Separate residential barracks for male and female trainees have been established within the campus to support long-term training programmes and ensure proper accommodation for recruits and officers undergoing courses at the institute.

The Police Training School at Prothrapur has previously received several recognitions for its work in training police personnel. Among its achievements are the Union Home Minister’s Medal for Excellence in Training and the Lieutenant Governor’s Commendation Disc. Trainers from the institution have also been awarded the Union Home Minister’s Medal for Training, acknowledging their role in maintaining high instructional standards.

Officials said the transformation of the training school into the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Police Training Institute represents a broader effort to modernise police training and improve institutional capacity in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The inauguration ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by the Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order), marking the formal launch of the institute under its new name and expanded mandate.
