Namunaghar Residents Get a Boost Towards Self-Employment

Date:

In a focused bid to promote sustainable self-employment through backyard poultry farming, the Veterinary Dispensary at Elephant Point distributed 52 chicks to beneficiaries in Gram Panchayat Namunaghar, marking another step in the administration’s push to strengthen rural livelihoods. Held at the Panchayat Bhawan, the distribution drive was spearheaded by the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services (AH&VS) and is part of a wider initiative to provide local communities with tangible, low-investment tools for income generation.

The event saw the active participation of local leadership and veterinary officials, reinforcing the link between public service delivery and grassroots governance. The Pradhan of Gram Panchayat Namunaghar and the Senior Veterinary Officer from Elephant Point presided over the programme, personally handing over the chicks to selected residents.

The choice of backyard poultry farming as a vehicle for self-employment reflects both economic pragmatism and ecological adaptability. With relatively low input costs, minimal space requirements, and quick returns in the form of eggs and meat, poultry farming has long been recognised as a viable means for augmenting household incomes in rural settings. By directly placing chicks in the hands of the local population, the initiative removes a major barrier to entry, the cost of procuring livestock, while simultaneously nurturing a sense of ownership and responsibility among the recipients.

The effort in Gram Panchayat Namunaghar adds to the growing roster of localised development projects being quietly piloted across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, small in scale but significant in their potential to seed larger change. With continued political will, consistent field engagement, and community cooperation, backyard poultry could move from being a supplementary income strategy to a reliable mainstay for rural islanders. For the 52 beneficiaries in Namunaghar, this small handout could well be the first step toward lasting economic independence.
