Entrepreneurship awareness drive draws strong student response

A one-day Entrepreneurship Awareness Programme was organised at Jawaharlal Nehru Rajkeeya Mahavidyalaya by the Branch MSME–Development and Facilitation Office, Sri Vijaya Puram, with the objective of promoting entrepreneurial culture among students, aspiring entrepreneurs, and local youth. The programme was aimed at creating awareness about opportunities available under various Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises schemes and encouraging self-employment as a viable career option.

The event witnessed the participation of 62 individuals, comprising students, aspiring entrepreneurs, and youth from the local community. Around 60 per cent of the participants belonged to the Scheduled Tribe community, reflecting focused outreach towards groups that are often underrepresented in formal entrepreneurial ecosystems. The programme sought to address this gap by familiarising participants with institutional support systems and government initiatives.

The primary objective of the programme was to motivate potential entrepreneurs by providing information on policy support, financial assistance, and procedural guidance related to enterprise development. Participants were introduced to the role of MSMEs in employment generation, economic diversification, and local development, particularly in island territories where opportunities for private sector growth are expanding.

The sessions highlighted various government schemes designed to support entrepreneurship, including those offering financial assistance, credit linkage, and capacity building. Participants were briefed on the process of accessing institutional finance and the importance of formalising enterprises to benefit from policy incentives and support mechanisms.

Representatives from financial institutions and government departments shared insights into the availability of credit, loan products, and advisory services for entrepreneurs. The discussions focused on addressing common challenges faced by first-time entrepreneurs, such as access to capital, regulatory compliance, and market linkage.

The programme also emphasised the role of entrepreneurship in generating employment and fostering inclusive growth. Participants were encouraged to explore enterprise opportunities aligned with local resources and market demand, particularly in sectors relevant to the island economy.

The initiative formed part of broader efforts by the MSME Ministry to promote entrepreneurship among youth and students by creating awareness at the educational level. By engaging participants early, the programme aimed to build confidence and interest in entrepreneurship as a sustainable livelihood option.

The event concluded with interactive discussions, allowing participants to seek clarifications and better understand the support available for starting and sustaining enterprises. The programme was positioned as a step towards strengthening the entrepreneurial ecosystem in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands through informed participation and institutional support.
