Monsoon Book Reading Festival 2.0 Promotes Literacy Among Island Students

Continuing its efforts to encourage reading among children, the State Library, Sri Vijaya Puram, under the Directorate of Education, organised a series of literary competitions on October 12 as part of the ongoing Monsoon Book Reading Festival 2.0. The month-long festival, held on all Sundays of October 2025, aims to foster a love for literature and provide a platform for young readers to engage with books creatively.

The competitions included Word Building Competition, Picture Hunt, and Draw Your Book, designed for students from Classes I to V. These events were curated to nurture creativity, improve vocabulary, and enhance literacy skills among young learners in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Students from both government and private schools participated enthusiastically, showcasing their imagination and learning through fun-based activities.

The initiative forms part of the Directorate of Education’s broader effort to strengthen reading culture and language learning among children. By incorporating interactive and visual learning activities, the festival encouraged students to explore the joy of reading beyond textbooks and develop an interest in creative expression.

During the prize distribution ceremony, Deputy Director of Education (Planning) Archana Singh attended as the chief guest. She interacted with the participants and encouraged them to make effective use of the State Library’s facilities. Singh highlighted that the library houses a vast collection of children’s books, general knowledge materials, fiction, storybooks, and competitive examination resources, along with a peaceful reading area.

She also announced that weekly programmes and reading sessions would continue to be held to engage students and promote continuous learning through library initiatives.

Prizes were presented to the winners of the Word Building Competition, Picture Hunt, and Draw Your Book contests as a mark of appreciation and motivation. The recognition aimed to inspire young readers to stay connected with books and literary activities.

The Monsoon Book Reading Festival 2.0 underscores the State Library’s commitment to nurturing a community of young readers through inclusive educational and creative programmes. By blending literature with engaging competitions, the festival strives to make reading an enjoyable and lasting habit among children.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Anbarasan, In-charge of the State Library, who acknowledged the contributions of students, teachers, and parents in making the programme successful. He reaffirmed the library’s commitment to continue similar initiatives that promote literacy and creativity among students across the islands.

The Monsoon Book Reading Festival 2.0 will continue throughout October, featuring more reading-oriented activities and interactive learning sessions for school students.
