In a step aimed at improving access to dairy products, the Andaman & Nicobar Islands Integrated Development Corporation Limited (ANIIDCO) has introduced the region’s first-ever Mobile Milk Parlour. The facility was formally inaugurated at Sri Vijaya Puram, marking a milestone in the islands’ efforts to expand food security and enhance consumer convenience.
The launch ceremony was presided over by the Chief Secretary of the Andaman & Nicobar Administration, who also serves as Chairman of ANIIDCO. Senior officials from the Administration and the Milk Plant Division were in attendance, underscoring the importance of the project for the local community. The initiative is expected to improve the distribution of milk and related products by bringing them closer to households, thereby reducing dependence on fixed outlets.
The Mobile Milk Parlour is designed to serve a wide range of products. Currently, it offers cow milk, toned milk, and double-toned milk, along with value-added dairy products such as sweet lassi, flavored yogurt, flavored milk, paneer, curd, and buttermilk. The range is intended to meet both basic nutritional needs and the growing demand for diverse, ready-to-consume options. Officials confirmed that the Milk Division is also preparing to expand the portfolio with soft ice cream and dedicated milk carts in the near future, further diversifying the consumer experience.
With a population dependent on limited supply routes, consistent and affordable access to milk products has long been a challenge. The Mobile Milk Parlour is expected to fill gaps in distribution by reaching localities that are underserved by permanent retail outlets. By delivering milk directly to communities, ANIIDCO aims to ensure that even residents in peripheral areas can obtain fresh dairy produce without difficulty.
Encouraging the consumption of locally produced milk helps support dairy farmers and strengthens the local economy. A growing market for milk and milk-based products could stimulate further production, reduce wastage, and create a sustainable cycle benefiting both producers and consumers.
Milk remains an important dietary staple, and access to hygienically processed products is critical in preventing nutritional deficiencies. By ensuring quality standards in production and distribution, the Mobile Milk Parlour provides an additional layer of safety and reliability. The service is meant to balance taste, health, and affordability, addressing concerns of families across varied income levels.
Mobile retailing of milk is not entirely new in India, but this marks the first such experiment in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. The logistical challenges of an archipelago have made innovative solutions necessary, and mobile distribution is being seen as a practical alternative. Depending on consumer response and operational success, similar facilities may be introduced across more locations in the future.
ANIIDCO’s Milk Division has been actively involved in ensuring that residents of the islands receive uninterrupted dairy supplies. The latest step is regarded as an extension of that responsibility, aligning convenience with the goals of nutrition and food security. Residents are expected to benefit not only from doorstep availability but also from the range of new options that are being gradually added.
With the inauguration of the Mobile Milk Parlour, the islands now witness a new phase in consumer services. For families, it means easier access to everyday dairy essentials; for local producers, it signals a stronger market; and for the administration, it reinforces the broader agenda of health, nutrition, and community welfare. The effort is also expected to build awareness about the value of local dairy products, generating demand that sustains both the industry and the households it serves.
