Doorstep Veterinary Camp Improves Livestock Fertility and Farmer Support

Date:

A doorstep infertility follow-up camp conducted by the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services (AH&VS) in Manglutan brought veterinary care directly to farmers, aiming to address reproductive health issues in livestock and improve farm productivity.

The initiative was carried out under the jurisdiction of the Veterinary Dispensary, Manglutan, where veterinary teams visited households to examine animals and provide on-site treatment. The outreach targeted livestock owners who required follow-up support for infertility-related concerns, ensuring access to veterinary services without requiring travel to distant facilities.

During the camp, officials examined a total of 18 animals across participating households. Clinical assessments confirmed that six of these animals were pregnant, offering immediate relief and positive outcomes for the farmers concerned. The remaining 12 animals received necessary medical treatment along with specific guidance to address underlying reproductive issues.

Veterinary teams also provided detailed advisory support to farmers, focusing on improving livestock management practices. Farmers were sensitised on aspects such as reproductive health, balanced nutrition, timely veterinary intervention, and effective heat detection. These measures were aimed at enhancing fertility rates and overall livestock productivity.

A total of 13 farmers directly benefitted from the initiative, which combined treatment with awareness and capacity-building at the grassroots level. By delivering services at the doorstep, the department sought to ensure that even farmers in rural and semi-rural areas could access timely veterinary care.

Officials indicated that the camp forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen veterinary outreach and reduce the economic impact of infertility in livestock. Addressing reproductive issues at the farm level is expected to improve breeding efficiency and reduce losses associated with delayed or unsuccessful conception.

The department emphasised that improving livestock health has a direct link to the livelihoods of farming families, particularly in regions where animal husbandry forms a key source of income. By promoting scientific practices and ensuring early intervention, authorities aim to support sustainable livestock development across the islands.

The initiative underscores the administration’s focus on expanding access to essential veterinary services and reinforcing support systems for livestock-dependent communities. Officials stated that similar camps will continue to be organised to strengthen field-level interventions and improve outcomes for farmers.
