Reuben Gauci, High Commissioner of Malta to India, has expressed concern over the prevailing political situation in Bangladesh, pointing to its implications for regional stability as well as for the Bangladeshi diaspora residing in Malta.
Speaking to IANS, Gauci said that his diplomatic responsibilities extend beyond India, as he also serves as Malta’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives, and as Ambassador to Nepal. This, he said, has prompted him to closely follow developments in Bangladesh, particularly given the presence of a sizable Bangladeshi community in Malta.
According to Gauci, any political instability in a country with a significant expatriate population abroad naturally raises concern for host nations. He noted that Malta is attentive to developments in Bangladesh due to the contributions and presence of Bangladeshi nationals living and working there.

The envoy observed that the current situation in Bangladesh is part of a longer period of political unrest rather than a sudden development. He referred to earlier events, including the political turmoil surrounding the removal of the government led by Sheikh Hasina, and said these developments have shaped the present circumstances.
Gauci expressed hope that the upcoming elections in Bangladesh, scheduled for February 3, would be conducted smoothly. He underlined that peaceful and orderly elections would be critical for restoring stability and confidence, not only within the country but also in the wider region.
While noting that Malta does not maintain major economic ties with Bangladesh, Gauci stressed that the concern over Bangladesh’s stability is not limited to Malta alone. He pointed out that India, as a neighbouring country, also has a direct stake in developments in Bangladesh, adding that the implications of political unrest could extend beyond bilateral or regional boundaries.
The High Commissioner further highlighted humanitarian concerns linked to Bangladesh, particularly the situation of the Rohingya population. He said Malta remains attentive to humanitarian issues in the region and maintains coordination with international organisations, including the World Food Programme, to stay informed about developments on the ground.
Gauci also referred to regular engagement with European Union diplomatic representatives in Dhaka. He noted that the EU Ambassador to Bangladesh, Michael Miller, provides updates on political and humanitarian conditions, helping partner countries remain informed about ongoing developments.
Reflecting on his tenure in India, Gauci spoke about the country’s political leadership and economic trajectory. He said he had observed India’s progress over the past five years and noted the country’s economic growth during the tenure of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
He also referred to regular interactions with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, describing him as an experienced diplomat. Gauci said India’s economic rise, from the sixth to the fourth largest economy globally, has been notable, adding that the government has articulated a vision of further advancement.
The comments come amid continued international attention on political stability in Bangladesh, with diplomats and observers closely watching developments ahead of the scheduled elections and their broader regional impact.
