Lt Gen Dinesh Singh Rana Takes Command of India’s Only Tri-Service Command

Lieutenant General Dinesh Singh Rana, a decorated military officer with over three decades of service, officially assumed command as the 18th Commander-in-Chief of the Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC) on June 1, 2025. His appointment marks a significant elevation from his previous role as Director General of the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), making him the first DIA chief to ascend to such a position.

The ANC, headquartered in Sri Vijaya Puram, is India’s only integrated tri-service operational command and plays a pivotal role in securing the Indian Ocean Region, including the strategically vital Malacca Straits.

Commissioned into the Garhwal Rifles in 1987, Lt Gen Rana has held numerous leadership and staff roles across terrains and missions, including tenures with the UN in Lebanon, command of infantry formations in the East, and instructional roles at premier defence institutions. His operational record includes oversight along the Line of Actual Control and intelligence appointments across key Army divisions.

He is a graduate of the NDA, DSSC Wellington, NDC Delhi, and has received advanced military education in Spain and the United States. Among his accolades are the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Yudh Seva Medal, Sena Medal, and multiple commendations for gallantry and distinguished service.

Apart from his military credentials, he holds a PhD on China’s defence modernisation and is the author of a widely regarded book on the evolution of the PLA. His strategic foresight and deep knowledge of joint operations are expected to bring renewed focus to the ANC, especially amid rising geopolitical tensions in the Indo-Pacific.

His leadership is expected to enhance the operational synergy of India’s armed forces in the region, sharpen maritime vigilance, and further India’s preparedness for joint warfare and humanitarian operations in an increasingly contested maritime theatre.
