Livestock health camps were organised in several rural areas of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands as part of efforts to strengthen veterinary outreach and improve animal health management at the community level. The camps were conducted by the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services Department with the objective of providing accessible healthcare services to livestock owners.
The initiative focused on extending preventive and curative veterinary services directly to villages, particularly in areas where access to regular veterinary facilities may be limited. Officials associated with the programme said the camps were aimed at reducing disease incidence, improving livestock productivity and supporting the livelihoods of farmers and animal rearers.
During the camps, veterinary professionals examined cattle, goats, poultry and other domestic animals, providing treatment for common ailments and administering preventive care. The services included health check-ups, deworming and guidance on basic animal care practices. Livestock owners were also advised on maintaining hygiene and proper nutrition to prevent disease outbreaks.

The outreach approach adopted for the camps was intended to ensure early detection of health issues and timely intervention. Officials noted that preventive measures are essential in minimising economic losses for farmers and ensuring the well-being of animals, which play a crucial role in rural household incomes.
Participants were informed about common livestock diseases and the importance of vaccination and regular health monitoring. The sessions also emphasised biosecurity measures and the role of farmers in preventing the spread of infections within and between villages.
The department highlighted that livestock health is closely linked to food security and rural development. By improving access to veterinary services, the administration aims to enhance the sustainability of livestock-based livelihoods in the Islands.
Officials said the camps also served as a platform for interaction between veterinary staff and livestock owners, enabling the exchange of information and addressing concerns related to animal health management. The interactive format allowed farmers to seek advice tailored to their specific conditions.
The Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services Department has been implementing similar outreach programmes as part of its routine activities. Officials indicated that such camps are particularly important in remote and rural locations, where regular access to veterinary care can be challenging.
The department plans to continue organising livestock health camps in other areas to expand coverage and ensure consistent service delivery. These initiatives are expected to complement existing veterinary infrastructure and contribute to improved animal health outcomes.
The camps concluded with officials reiterating the importance of regular veterinary care and preventive practices. By bringing services closer to communities, the administration aims to strengthen animal health management and support rural livelihoods across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
