Weighing and Measuring Instruments to Be Verified Across N&M Andaman

The Directorate of Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, in coordination with Legal Metrology Officers, will conduct a verification and stamping camp for all weighing and measuring instruments, liquor/peg measures, and auto fare meters across North & Middle Andaman District from January 9 to 20, 2026. The initiative aims to ensure compliance with legal standards and safeguard consumer interests.

The camp will cover multiple areas in a phased schedule. From January 9 to 13, the camp will be held at the Civil Supply Unit in Diglipur. On January 14, it will move to the Office of the Assistant Director, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, in Mayabunder, followed by Billiground Panchayat Market on January 15. Rangat Civil Supply Unit will host the camp from January 16 to 18, Kadamtala Panchayat Market on January 19, and The CCS Ltd. in Baratang on January 20.

Traders, bar establishments, auto rickshaw owners, and other government and semi-government establishments have been informed of the schedule and instructed to ensure that all weighing and measuring instruments are presented for verification. Officials emphasized that the camp will involve rigorous checks, and only instruments meeting legal standards will be stamped for continued use.

Authorities have warned that any business or establishment found using unverified or faulty weighing and measuring instruments after the stipulated dates will face stringent legal action under the applicable laws. The initiative seeks to prevent fraudulent practices, maintain transparency in trade, and protect consumer rights throughout the district.

The Legal Metrology team, alongside officials from the Directorate of Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, will perform on-site inspections, calibration, and stamping of all relevant instruments. The camp also aims to educate local traders and operators about the legal requirements and the importance of accurate measurement in commercial transactions.

Officials stated that the initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance regulatory oversight and ensure that all commercial activities comply with prescribed legal standards. They urged all concerned establishments to cooperate fully and avail themselves of the verification services within the camp schedule.

By implementing this programme, the Administration aims to strengthen consumer protection measures and foster a fair trading environment in North & Middle Andaman. Stakeholders, including local traders and transport operators, are encouraged to participate actively and comply with the directives to avoid legal consequences.

The verification camp is expected to benefit consumers by reducing instances of overcharging due to faulty instruments and promoting trust in local businesses. Authorities will maintain records of compliance and follow up with any establishments found violating standards, ensuring accountability and adherence to law.
