ICAR–Krishi Vigyan Kendra (CIARI), South Andaman successfully concluded a three-day sponsored training programme on “Spawn Production Technology and Organic Oyster Mushroom Cultivation” from December 29 to 31, 2025. Conducted at the KVK premises in South Andaman, the initiative aimed to enhance technical knowledge and hands-on skills among farmers, rural youth, and aspiring entrepreneurs, fostering mushroom cultivation as a sustainable income-generating enterprise suitable for island conditions.
The programme was inaugurated by Dr. Y. Ramakrishna, Principal Scientist and Head of KVK, Sri Vijaya Puram, who encouraged participants to explore mushroom cultivation as a viable livelihood option. In his address, he emphasized the significance of adopting scientific methods to ensure quality production, higher yields, and profitability. He also highlighted the potential of oyster mushroom cultivation due to its low investment requirements, short production cycles, effective use of agricultural residues, and high nutritional value.
Technical sessions on spawn production technology and organic oyster mushroom cultivation were delivered by Mohit, Subject Matter Specialist in Plant Pathology. Participants were trained on selecting quality spawn, maintaining hygiene, choosing appropriate substrates, and practicing organic cultivation methods for optimal yield and disease-free production. Practical demonstrations provided hands-on exposure to spawn preparation, crop management, and maintenance techniques.
Dr. Pooja Kapoor, Subject Matter Specialist in Home Science, conducted sessions on value addition in mushrooms, demonstrating the preparation of mushroom-based products such as soup, powder, and pickles. She also educated participants on food safety, nutritional benefits, and strategies to enhance market value through processing.
During the programme, Dr. Y. Ramakrishna further guided participants on selecting suitable substrates, marketing strategies, and proper labelling, sealing, and branding of mushroom products. Trainees were also introduced to eco-friendly waste management practices, including the utilisation of spent mushroom substrate for sustainable farming applications.
A total of 20 participants from various Panchayats actively engaged in the programme, gaining knowledge and practical experience to launch mushroom-based enterprises. The training concluded with positive feedback from attendees, many of whom expressed confidence in starting cultivation and production ventures, contributing to livelihood enhancement and nutritional security in the region.
The programme was conducted under the guidance of Dr. Y. Ramakrishna and Dr. Jai Sunder, Director of ICAR–CIARI, Sri Vijaya Puram. The initiative aligns with efforts to promote sustainable agriculture and entrepreneurship among island communities, equipping residents with modern agricultural techniques and practical skills to improve income generation and food security.
