The Khadi and Village Industries Board organised a Khadi promotional activity at Jawaharlal Nehru Rajkeeya Mahavidyalaya (JNRM) as part of the ongoing Khadi Mahotsav, focusing on raising awareness among students about the relevance and legacy of Khadi. The initiative aimed to engage young learners in understanding Khadi’s journey from its roots in India’s freedom movement to its growing prominence in contemporary sustainable fashion.
Dr. Pearl Devdas, Principal of JNRM, attended the programme as the chief guest and commended the Board’s efforts in encouraging students to connect with Khadi’s historical and cultural significance. She highlighted that adopting Khadi contributes to strengthening rural industries and supports artisans whose livelihoods depend on traditional textile production.
Officials briefed students on the origins of Khadi, tracing its evolution from a symbol of self-reliance to a widely recognised eco-friendly fabric. The session emphasized the fabric’s shift from traditional attire to a versatile and modern fashion choice, appealing to both heritage enthusiasts and environmentally conscious consumers. Students were encouraged to promote the use of Khadi within their communities and consider incorporating it into their daily wardrobes to support rural weavers and sustain indigenous textile traditions.
A Khadi sales-cum-exhibition was also organised within the college premises, attracting strong participation from students and staff. Attendees explored a variety of Khadi items on display, including garments, accessories, and hand-crafted products. The exhibition reflected increasing interest among young people in sustainable clothing choices and locally made fabrics.
The promotional activity served as part of the broader Khadi Mahotsav celebrations, which aim to strengthen public awareness and revive interest in Khadi as a symbol of India’s cultural identity and sustainable future. The event at JNRM reinforced the importance of preserving traditional craftsmanship while encouraging the next generation to support rural artisans and environmentally responsible textiles.
