Jan Sunwai Bridges Police-Public Concerns In Kalighat

Date:

The Panchayat Hall in Kalighat became the venue for a Jan Sunwai on Saturday where police officials and community members came together to discuss pressing local concerns. The event, chaired by Superintendent of Police (District) North & Middle Andaman, Shweta K. Sugathan, IPS, along with SDPO Diglipur Ankesh Yadav and SHO of Kalighat SI S.N. Halder drew the participation of over 80 people, including Pradhans, Zilla Parishad members, PRI representatives, and residents.

The open forum gave locals an opportunity to voice grievances on issues that directly affect daily life. Concerns included the illegal sale of liquor, increasing traffic congestion, parking difficulties, and the demand for greater police presence at key locations. Participants also emphasized the need for awareness campaigns against drug abuse, an issue that has been gaining prominence in the islands.

Responding to the concerns, SP Sugathan assured participants that the department would initiate necessary measures to address each issue. She underlined that effective policing depends on close cooperation between the police and the community. “Collective effort is the only way to ensure peace and order,” she said, highlighting the importance of community support in tackling social problems.

As part of the programme, an awareness session was conducted focusing on the dangers of drug abuse and the importance of traffic discipline. Officials urged residents to follow road safety rules and to remain vigilant about youth exposure to narcotics. The session was aimed at fostering a sense of shared responsibility for building a safer and more disciplined society.

In her closing remarks, the Superintendent of Police urged citizens to promptly share any credible information on unlawful activities, whether related to drugs, crime, or other offences. She assured the public that the identity of informers would be kept strictly confidential and that credible inputs would be suitably rewarded. The department also reminded residents that information can be shared at the nearest police station or through helpline numbers 100, 112, and 03192-273344.

The Jan Sunwai at Kalighat reaffirmed the importance of dialogue between law enforcement and citizens in addressing ground-level issues. With participants actively raising concerns and police promising responsive action, the event reflected a step toward strengthening trust and cooperation for a crime-free society.
