New Delhi, April 30: The Centre has approved the appointment of Anupinder Singh Grewal as President of the National Company Law Tribunal, placing him at the helm of the country’s primary adjudicatory body for corporate disputes.
An official notification issued by the Department of Personnel and Training stated that the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet cleared the proposal submitted by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs for the appointment. Grewal will serve for a period of five years from the date he assumes charge, or until he attains the age of 67, whichever is earlier.
He succeeds Ramalingam Sudhakar, who had taken charge as President of the tribunal on November 1, 2021, and demitted office earlier this year.

The National Company Law Tribunal plays a central role in adjudicating corporate disputes in India, including cases under the Companies Act and insolvency matters governed by the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code. The appointment comes at a time when the tribunal continues to handle a significant volume of cases related to corporate restructuring and insolvency resolution.
Born on March 10, 1964, in Ludhiana district of Punjab, Grewal pursued higher education at St. Stephen’s College, where he completed his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in History in 1985 and 1987, respectively. He later obtained his law degree from the University of Delhi in 1992.
Grewal began his legal career at the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 1992 and subsequently held several key positions representing the Punjab government. His roles included Assistant Advocate General, Deputy Advocate General, Senior Deputy Advocate General and Additional Advocate General.
In November 2009, he was appointed Senior Panel Counsel for handling Central government cases in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, a role he continued until his elevation to the Bench.

He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on September 25, 2014. Later that year, he was transferred to the Rajasthan High Court and was sworn in as a permanent judge in May 2016. He was subsequently transferred back to the Punjab and Haryana High Court, where he resumed judicial duties in October 2016.
The appointment places Grewal in charge of overseeing the tribunal’s functioning across its benches, including the adjudication of complex corporate and insolvency cases.
Officials indicated that the leadership role at the tribunal remains critical in ensuring timely resolution of corporate disputes and maintaining the efficiency of insolvency proceedings under existing legal frameworks.
