South Andaman DM Orders Reroute on NH-04 Due to Flaws in New Jodakilan Bridge

The District Magistrate of South Andaman has ordered the diversion of vehicular traffic along a section of National Highway 04 near Jodakilan, following the identification of structural issues on the new minor bridge at the location. Starting July 20, all vehicles will be rerouted to the old existing Jodakilan Minor Bridge (Km 21.717) until further notice.

The decision comes under the powers conferred by the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, in conjunction with the Administration’s Notification dated March 10, 2008. The authorities have concluded that immediate rectification and strengthening of the new bridge are essential to ensure public safety.

While the notification does not elaborate on the specific defects identified in the newer bridge, it has been deemed unfit for regular vehicular movement. The public works authorities are expected to initiate strengthening work immediately, although a specific completion timeline has not been shared.

Transport operators, enforcement agencies, and related departments have been instructed to comply strictly with the diversion order. The move is aimed at preempting any accident or disruption in this critical corridor that connects various parts of South Andaman.

The rerouted bridge, though older, is reportedly in serviceable condition and had previously carried traffic before the commissioning of the newer structure. It is anticipated that heavy vehicles, including passenger buses and commercial carriers, will continue operations on the diverted route, though traffic congestion is likely during peak hours.

The Jodakilan section of NH-04 is a vital stretch that witnesses a regular flow of private and commercial vehicles. Authorities have advised commuters to factor in additional travel time due to the diversion and remain alert to traffic signage and control measures during the repair phase.

Officials from the Public Works Department are expected to carry out a technical review and reinforcement of the affected bridge component, particularly the wearing coat, an essential layer that ensures smooth and safe road traction. A timeline for the completion of the rectification work will be announced depending on the findings of the structural review.

This is not the first time such interventions have been required on the NH-04 corridor. The tropical climate, combined with heavy monsoons and constant vehicular pressure, often accelerates wear and tear on key infrastructure. Maintenance operations are frequently undertaken during the monsoon period to mitigate safety risks before the onset of increased traffic during festival or tourist seasons.

Though no accidents or incidents have been linked to the current bridge issue, officials have moved proactively to minimize risk. Public cooperation has been sought for adherence to the diversion and any associated traffic regulations over the coming weeks.

Traffic personnel are expected to be deployed at key diversion points to manage the flow and ensure smooth passage. Signage and temporary barriers are likely to be placed in advance to guide drivers along the alternate route. Transport operators have also been notified and instructed to inform their drivers and clients of the change.

Meanwhile, commuters have been urged to follow all traffic norms and cooperate with enforcement teams for a safe and coordinated transition.
