A teacher of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Car Nicobar lost her life on Holi after being swept away by strong waves at a beach near the school campus in Arong village. The incident occurred on Wednesday morning and has cast a pall of grief over the educational community in Car Nicobar.
The deceased has been identified as Renuka, who was serving as a teacher at the residential school. According to sources, a group of five teachers along with the son of the school principal had gone to the nearby beach during the morning hours. While they were at the shore, three members of the group were suddenly caught by powerful waves and dragged into the sea.
Local residents present in the vicinity responded immediately and managed to rescue two of those swept away. However, Renuka was carried further into deeper waters by strong currents before help could reach her. The circumstances under which the waves engulfed the group remain unclear, though sources indicated that they had not ventured into the sea for swimming at the time.
Rescue efforts were mounted promptly, and an Indian Air Force helicopter was deployed to assist in extracting her from the waters. She was airlifted to the Air Force Station at Car Nicobar and subsequently transported to BJR Hospital in the headquarters area. Doctors at the hospital declared her brought dead on arrival.
The incident occurred on the day of Holi, when many across the Islands were engaged in festivities. In Car Nicobar, the sudden turn of events during what was described as a routine outing has left colleagues and residents in shock. Educational institutions in the region are understood to have been informed, and the development has drawn attention to the risks posed by unpredictable sea conditions along island shores.
Sources stated that Renuka did not have immediate family members residing in Car Nicobar. Her family is reportedly based in Sri Vijaya Puram. Following completion of the post-mortem examination, arrangements have been made to transport the mortal remains to Haddo in Sri Vijaya Puram on March 5.
Beaches across the Nicobar group of islands are known for strong tidal movements and sudden surges, particularly during certain phases of the tide. Local residents often caution visitors about shifting currents even in areas that appear calm. Authorities have not yet issued an official statement detailing the precise sequence of events, and it remains to be clarified how the waves swept the group from the shoreline.
The tragedy has once again highlighted the vulnerability of coastal zones in island territories, where sea conditions can change rapidly. For the school community at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, the loss marks a sombre moment, coming on a day otherwise associated with celebration.
