JNRM Assistant Professor Held Under POCSO Act; Further Details Awaited

Authorities yet to disclose further details as probe continues

Date:

Sri Vijaya Puram( (Port Blai) April 6: Humfrygunj Police have arrested an assistant professor of Jawaharlal Nehru Rajkeeya Mahavidyalaya (JNRM) under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act in connection with the alleged sexual harassment of a minor girl, police sources said.

The accused, a resident of Kalapathar, was arrested on April 2 after the family of the minor lodged a complaint at Humfrygunj Police Station.

Police sources said the accused is currently serving as an assistant professor at JNRM. Further details of the case are awaited.

The college has also remained in focus over the past year after two student deaths were reported from the JNRM girls’ hostel in separate incidents. In the first case, reported on November 19, 2025, police said they were examining whether alleged harassment linked to a personal relationship had played a role in the death of a first-year Political Science student, identified as Sonali from Paschim Sagar in Diglipur. She was found dead in her hostel room on November 14, and investigators were collecting call detail records, hostel entry logs, and statements from students and hostel staff as part of the probe.

In the second case, reported on January 25 and followed up on January 27, 2026, a second-year Geography student, Kripa Malakar from Diglipur, was found dead inside the girls’ hostel. Police said the circumstances remained unclear and that no conclusions would be drawn until forensic and post-mortem reports were received. In a later account, her family said they were still awaiting answers, while police were examining all possible angles and had questioned a young man without indicating any confirmed link.

No official link has been established between those earlier cases and the present POCSO case.
