Tourism Department Launches Island Coconut Festival Celebrating Heritage and Crafts

The Island Coconut Festival-2025, organized by the Tourism Department of the Andaman and Nicobar Administration in collaboration with allied departments and associations, commenced with an inaugural ceremony highlighting the theme “Celebrating Coconut – Culture, Cuisine and Crafts of the Islands.” The event was inaugurated by Commissioner-cum-Secretary (Tourism) Chanchal Yadav, IAS, who was warmly welcomed by the Nicobarese tribe with a traditional garland. The ceremony was also attended by Secretary (IP&T) Jyoti Kumari, IAS, Director (IP&T) Vinayak Chamadia, IAS, senior officials from the administration, representatives of various departments, and members of the public.

The festival aims to promote the cultural, economic, and culinary significance of coconut in the Islands. Commissioner-cum-Secretary Yadav visited the exhibition stalls, interacted with participants, and appreciated the creativity and craftsmanship displayed. The exhibition highlighted traditional and region-specific coconut-based products, crafts, and wellness items, reflecting both cultural heritage and innovative applications. The festival also emphasizes the role of coconut-based tourism in supporting sustainable livelihoods across the region.

Visitors engaged in multiple competitions and activities. The Coconut Dehusking Challenge tested participants’ speed and skill, while the cooking contest highlighted culinary talent with a range of coconut-based dishes. Food stalls offered an assortment of delicacies, including chocolate coconut bites, toffees, cookies, barfis, and savory items. Government departments and local associations showcased products and services, demonstrating the diverse applications of coconut and sectoral progress in crafts, cuisine, and wellness.

The festival also included sports and activity zones organized by the Education and Sports Department. Children participated in chess, drawing competitions, and the Coconut Throw contest, contributing to an interactive and engaging environment for families. Visitors had the opportunity to learn about sustainable coconut farming practices and sample organic wellness products made from coconut.

Cultural programs were organized by the Department of Art and Culture, featuring performances by Kailashpati Dance Academy and Sujata Dance Academy, presenting semi-classical, folk, and fusion dance routines. Musical performances by Melody Mix and Soul Music Association added vibrancy to the event and entertained attendees.

The Island Coconut Festival-2025 offers an immersive celebration of the coconut’s role in the Islands’ culture, economy, and lifestyle. The festival continues on October 10 from 3 PM to 10 PM at the ITF Ground, providing locals and tourists the opportunity to explore coconut-based products, crafts, and activities while appreciating the region’s cultural and artistic heritage.
