Andaman & Nicobar Islands to Host 1st Island Bird Festival from February 14–17, 2026

The Department of Environment and Forests, Andaman & Nicobar Administration, has announced that the 1st Island Bird Festival will be held from February 14 to 17, 2026, marking a significant step in promoting bird conservation and ecological awareness in the islands. The festival is expected to bring together researchers, bird enthusiasts, conservationists, and the general public to celebrate and conserve the unique avifaunal diversity of the region.

Ahead of the main event, a series of pre-festival activities was conducted today across all forest divisions, from Nicobar to Diglipur. Organized in coordination with the Andaman Avian Club, these pre-events aimed to create awareness about local bird species, ecosystems, and the importance of biodiversity. Participants included students, teachers, members of local communities, elected representatives, researchers, and officers and staff of the Department of Environment and Forests.

The pre-festival programme featured a range of interactive activities designed to engage participants and foster a sense of responsibility toward avian conservation. Guided ecological walks introduced attendees to local ecosystems and intertidal zones, while practical sessions such as the Build-a-Nest Challenge and Sketch-a-Bird Session allowed participants to learn hands-on about bird habitats and behavior. A Quiz on Birds and the Feed the Birds Station provided further opportunities for participants of all ages to deepen their knowledge and appreciation of the islands’ rich birdlife.

Officials noted that the pre-events received enthusiastic participation, highlighting the growing interest in ornithology and conservation among local communities. Similar pre-festival activities are scheduled for February 7, 2026, to further prepare communities and schools ahead of the main festival.

The upcoming Island Bird Festival, scheduled from February 14 to 17, 2026, is expected to be a landmark event for the region. It will provide a platform for exchanging knowledge between researchers and conservationists, while also promoting eco-tourism and citizen engagement in environmental protection. Participants can look forward to guided birdwatching tours, workshops, interactive sessions, and exhibitions that showcase both the diversity of avian species in the islands and ongoing conservation efforts.

Details regarding the festival, including the programme schedule, registration process, and other updates, have been made available on the official website of the Department of Environment and Forests at https://forest.and.nic.in/ibf/.

With the first-ever Island Bird Festival, the administration aims to create an enduring culture of conservation and awareness in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. By engaging local communities, schools, and researchers, the initiative seeks to ensure sustainable protection of the islands’ avian biodiversity while promoting education, research, and responsible eco-tourism.
