Trump’s Attack on Pope Leo XIV Draws Sharp Response from Iran Embassy

Date:

Accra, April 13: The Iran Embassy in Ghana on Monday sharply criticised Donald Trump after he described Pope Leo XIV as “weak” following the pontiff’s call for peace, intensifying an ongoing exchange involving political and religious leadership.

In a post on X, the embassy accused Trump of past misconduct and questioned his criticism of the Pope, citing allegations and legal issues linked to the former US President. The statement included references to his personal conduct and convictions, while also criticising his foreign policy actions.

The embassy’s response followed Trump’s remarks on his Truth Social platform, where he criticised Pope Leo XIV’s positions on crime, foreign policy and international issues, including Iran. Trump described the Pope as “weak on crime” and expressed disagreement with what he characterised as leniency on matters concerning Iran.

He also raised concerns over the Pope’s statements about the Trump administration, referencing the Church’s experience during COVID-19 restrictions in the United States. Trump further criticised the Pope’s views on global conflicts and US foreign interventions, including actions related to Venezuela, linking them to concerns about drugs and crime entering the United States.

In his post, Trump defended his administration’s record, citing electoral success, crime reduction and economic performance. He also made claims regarding the circumstances of Pope Leo XIV’s election, suggesting it was linked to his own presidency.

The remarks included personal comments about the Pope, including comparisons with his brother, and criticism of his interactions with political figures. Trump urged the pontiff to focus on religious leadership rather than political issues.

The Iran Embassy’s response escalated the exchange, using strong language to condemn Trump’s remarks and reiterating its criticism of his actions. The diplomatic reaction underscores rising tensions involving political discourse, religion and international relations.

Pope Leo XIV, the first American-born pontiff, has in recent weeks called for peace and restraint in global conflicts, including tensions involving Iran. His statements have focused on dialogue and de-escalation in ongoing international disputes.

The exchange between Trump and the Iran Embassy reflects broader geopolitical tensions, with religious leadership and political narratives intersecting in public discourse.
