LPG Cylinders Dispatched to Katchal by Indian Navy Amid Shipping Disruption

Emergency LPG consignment dispatched on July 15 after regular shipping disruption affected domestic cooking gas availability in remote Katchal Island.

Date:

Sri Vijaya Puram, July 17: Filled domestic LPG cylinders were dispatched from Sri Vijaya Puram to Katchal Island on July 15 through an Indian Navy vessel after disruption of regular shipping services affected the availability of domestic cooking gas in the remote Nicobar island. The emergency movement of the essential commodity was coordinated by the Andaman and Nicobar Administration, the Andaman and Nicobar Command and the Indian Navy to address the immediate requirement of LPG consumers on the island.

The dispatch was undertaken after the temporary unavailability of regular shipping arrangements interrupted the transportation of filled LPG cylinders to Katchal Island, affecting the supply of an essential household fuel. In view of the urgent requirement and the logistical challenges associated with transporting LPG to remote islands, the Andaman and Nicobar Administration sought the support of the Indian Navy to facilitate the movement of the cylinders.

Following the request, the Andaman and Nicobar Command extended logistical support for transporting the consignment. The filled domestic LPG cylinders were loaded at Sri Vijaya Puram and dispatched to Katchal Island through an Indian Navy vessel.

The Administration said the consignment is expected to reach Katchal Island shortly. After its arrival, necessary arrangements will be made to distribute the cylinders among consumers to restore the availability of domestic cooking gas on the island.

The Administration stated that it has been closely monitoring the LPG supply situation across the islands and is taking necessary measures to ensure the timely availability of essential commodities, particularly in remote and far-flung island regions where transportation challenges can disrupt routine supplies.

It also acknowledged the assistance provided by the Andaman and Nicobar Command and the Indian Navy in facilitating the transportation of the LPG cylinders to Katchal Island, enabling the emergency movement of the essential commodity despite the disruption in regular cargo services.

The latest dispatch comes as an immediate response to supply disruptions that affected Katchal Island, where the availability of domestic cooking gas was impacted due to logistical constraints and the interruption of regular shipping services. The situation underscored the vulnerability of remote Nicobar islands to breaks in the transportation of essential commodities, with residents facing delays in receiving LPG supplies whenever routine cargo movement is disrupted.

The July 15 dispatch was carried out to address the immediate requirement of consumers until regular shipping arrangements resume, ensuring that households dependent on LPG receive the essential cooking fuel despite continuing transportation constraints.
