The Government of India announced on Thursday the successful conclusion of two major rounds of trade negotiations with Latin American partners, Peru and Chile, as part of its ongoing efforts to deepen trade, investment, and strategic economic cooperation with the region.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the ninth round of India–Peru Trade Agreement negotiations was held in Lima, Peru, from November 3–5, marking significant progress across critical areas of the proposed pact. The discussions covered key chapters such as Trade in Goods and Services, Rules of Origin, Technical Barriers to Trade, Customs Procedures, Dispute Settlement, and Critical Minerals.
Peru’s Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Teresa Stella Mera Gomez, reaffirmed her country’s commitment to the timely conclusion of the negotiations. She noted that the agreement would strengthen complementarities between the two economies and promote increased trade and investment flows.
India’s Ambassador to Peru, Vishvas Vidu Sapkal, highlighted that the agreement aligns with India’s sustained growth trajectory and would open new avenues for collaboration in critical minerals, pharmaceuticals, automobiles, textiles, and food processing. Both sides also agreed to hold inter-sessional meetings to resolve pending issues ahead of the next round of negotiations scheduled for January 2026 in New Delhi, the ministry said.
In a related development, the third round of India–Chile Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) negotiations took place in Santiago, Chile, from October 27–30. The talks addressed a broad spectrum of topics including Trade in Goods and Services, Investment Promotion, Rules of Origin, Intellectual Property Rights, Technical Barriers to Trade/Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures, Economic Cooperation, and Critical Minerals.
Both India and Chile reaffirmed their commitment to a time-bound and early conclusion of the CEPA negotiations aimed at expanding market access, boosting supply chain resilience, and fostering deeper economic integration.
The Ministry emphasised that India’s expanding engagement with Peru and Chile is a testament to its strategic focus on strengthening partnerships across Latin America through mutually beneficial and comprehensive economic cooperation frameworks.
With Latin America emerging as a key partner in critical minerals, clean energy, and diversified supply chains, these negotiations underscore India’s intent to broaden its trade architecture beyond traditional markets while aligning with its long-term economic diplomacy goals.
