India is set to host its first-ever 5150 Triathlon under the globally renowned IRONMAN brand, with Chennai confirmed as the debut venue. Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Udhayanidhi Stalin, officially launched the event on Friday. The race is scheduled for January 11 at the MGM Beach Resort on East Coast Road.
The Chennai edition builds on IRONMAN’s presence in India, which began with the launch of IRONMAN 70.3 in Goa in 2019. Since then, Goa has become the country’s triathlon hub, drawing more than 1,200 athletes from 50 nations. Now, the 5150 Triathlon Series, one of the world’s most popular Olympic-distance race formats, makes its entry into India.
The 5150 Triathlon consists of a 1.5 km swim, a 40 km cycling leg, and a 10 km run. First introduced globally in 2011, the race is often seen as an entry point for athletes aiming to progress towards longer formats such as IRONMAN 70.3 and the full IRONMAN.
Speaking at the launch, Udhayanidhi Stalin said the state is committed to supporting world-class sporting events and building the necessary infrastructure. The partnership with IRONMAN India and the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) aims to inspire athletes across age groups while positioning Chennai as a destination for endurance sports.
Alongside the triathlon, Chennai will also see the introduction of the Duathlon Series in India. This new addition brings a global racing format to the country, with categories including the Sprint Duathlon (5 km run, 20 km cycle, 2.5 km run), Olympic Duathlon (10 km run, 40 km cycle, 5 km run), and the IRONKIDS Chennai race for ages 6-16, featuring distances of 1 km, 2 km, and 3 km.
Deepak Raj, Country Head and Franchise Owner of IRONMAN India, said the expansion represents more than just an additional race. “This is about building communities around running and cycling and creating opportunities for both newcomers and seasoned athletes,” he said. He emphasised that the partnership with Tamil Nadu provides a long-term platform to strengthen India’s endurance sports culture.
The official unveiling of the 5150 Triathlon Chennai logo also took place at the launch, with senior Tamil Nadu officials Athulya Mishra and J. Meghnatha Reddy joining IRONMAN India leaders Deepak Raj and Aarathi Swaminathan for the occasion.
With Chennai now on the IRONMAN calendar, athletes from across India and abroad are expected to gather in January for the landmark event. For the country’s endurance sports community, the race is being seen as a major milestone, adding another dimension to India’s growing triathlon and fitness culture.
