The Andaman & Nicobar Administration has announced a detailed traffic and parking management plan for Sri Vijaya Puram in connection with the full-dress rehearsal of Independence Day celebrations on August 13 and the main function on August 15. The arrangements are designed to ensure smooth movement, security, and crowd control during the ceremonial events at Netaji Stadium, while accommodating the presence of dignitaries, participants, and large public gatherings.
According to the plan, the cavalcade of the Lieutenant Governor and other dignitaries holding parking card ‘P’ (Green) will be parked inside Netaji Stadium. Holders of parking card ‘P’ (Pink) will park near Andaman Club and at designated Netaji Stadium parking areas. Vehicles with either ‘P’ Green or Pink labels may use any approach route but must reach the venue by 8:30 a.m., after which entry will be restricted at key junctions including Gymkhana Crossing, RK Mission, and the Fire Brigade headquarters crossing.
Post-event dispersal will be staggered, with ‘P’ label vehicles following a set route via Scout Hut Junction, Vikas Bhawan, Fire Brigade, and APWD Crossing to their destinations. Vehicles with ‘P-1’ parking labels will arrive through Model School, Clock Tower, and Gymkhana Crossing, proceeding to parking zones on the western side of Netaji Stadium and near the Swimming Pool. These vehicles will be allowed to approach the stadium’s main gate only after the departure of ‘P’ label vehicles to pick up guests, leaving via Scout Hut Junction, Girls School Crossing, RK Mission, and RGT Road.
All other vehicles without parking labels, including two-wheelers, will be parked at Water Sports Complex and Girls School parking areas. To minimise congestion, vehicles heading to South Point from Aberdeen Bazar will be diverted via Model School Crossing, Bengali Club, Goalghar, Secretariat Junction, Police Line, and Nayagaon. Similarly, vehicles travelling to Aberdeen Bazar from South Point will take South Point, Shadipur, Nayagaon Junction, Police Line, RBV, Secretariat Junction, and Goalghar. Heavy vehicles, including private and STS buses, will not be allowed towards Cellular Jail between 7:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m., and will instead be diverted via Goalghar and Junglighat from Bengali Club.
No vehicles will be allowed towards the function venue from Y-Narayan Junction, RK Mission, Fire Brigade Junction, and Water Sports Junction after 8:30 a.m. Traffic towards Aberdeen Bazar will be halted once the function begins until the dispersal of crowds. Vehicles transporting parade contingents will drop off participants at Netaji Stadium before proceeding to parking at Water Sports Complex or Girls School. After the parade, they will return via Y-Narayan Junction to collect contingents.
Special arrangements have been made for medical emergencies. Ambulances and emergency vehicles heading to GB Pant Hospital will be permitted through Y-Narayan Junction and Cellular Jail to the hospital. This route will remain closed to other traffic from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Alternate hospital access will also be available via Gandhi Statue, Marine Gate, Sisty Nagar, Dignabad Sea Shore Road, and Khan Junction, as well as via Bengali Club, Clock Tower, Gymkhana Crossing, Round Basthi, Dignabad Sea Shore Road, and Khan Junction.
To avoid maritime congestion, private tourist boats operating from Aberdeen Jetty to North Bay, NSCB Dweep, and other destinations will be shifted to Junglighat Jetty on August 13 and 15.
The traffic plan underscores the administration’s efforts to balance ceremonial protocols with public convenience and safety. The measures aim to prevent bottlenecks, maintain emergency access, and ensure dignified conduct of the Independence Day celebrations in the heart of Sri Vijaya Puram. With rehearsals and the main event drawing large crowds, the success of the arrangements will hinge on public cooperation and adherence to the designated routes and parking protocols.
