The Andaman and Nicobar Administration has taken two major steps toward promoting inclusive and community-driven sports culture with the successful completion of the First Children with Special Needs (CwSN) Sports Meet and the inauguration of a Fit India Football for Schools (F4S) coaching centre at Girls Senior Secondary School, Sri Vijaya Puram. Both initiatives, organized under the Department of Education and the Department of Sports & Youth Affairs, reflect the Administration’s commitment to fostering physical fitness, inclusivity, and holistic development among students.
The First CwSN Sports Meet, organized by the Block Project Officer (Samagra Shiksha), brought together differently-abled students from various schools, providing them with a platform to demonstrate athletic talent, determination, and teamwork. Held over two days at GSSS Bhatubasti, the meet was aimed at integrating children with special needs into mainstream school sports and encouraging participation beyond academic boundaries.
Officials from the Directorate of Education, who presided over the closing ceremony, lauded the participants’ enthusiasm and perseverance. They reiterated the Department’s commitment to extend continuous support by providing sports equipment, specialized coaching, and accessible facilities for CwSN students. Prizes and trophies were awarded to the winners, while every participant was acknowledged for their effort and spirit.
Organizers said the meet embodies the inclusive vision of the Samagra Shiksha programme and the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasize equitable access to education and sports for all learners. Teachers and special educators ensured that each event was adapted to suit the diverse abilities of the participants, creating an atmosphere of equality and encouragement. The initiative has set a precedent for future district-level and inter-school sports meets dedicated to children with special needs.
In another major development, the Fit India Football for Schools (F4S) programme added momentum to the islands’ sports movement with the inauguration of a dedicated football coaching centre for girls at Girls Senior Secondary School, Sri Vijaya Puram. The centre, launched under the guidance of the Deputy Education Office, aims to motivate students, especially girls, to participate in sports and adopt an active, healthy lifestyle.
The coaching sessions, held daily from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., are supervised by trained physical education instructors. The programme focuses on skill-building, teamwork, discipline, and leadership through structured football training. Officials emphasized that sports like football play an important role in promoting self-confidence, mental well-being, and social inclusion among young learners.
At the inaugural event, students were encouraged to attend the sessions regularly. To promote participation, the Department announced that girls who maintain consistent attendance will receive new football shoes on New Year’s Day as a token of appreciation. The initiative falls under the national Fit India Movement, which seeks to integrate physical education into daily life and inspire youth to pursue fitness as a lifelong practice.
Both the CwSN Sports Meet and the F4S Football Centre highlight the Administration’s unified approach to sports development—focusing not only on competition and performance but also on inclusivity, accessibility, and holistic growth. These programmes mark a shift toward viewing sports as a vehicle for empowerment and social change rather than a privilege for a few.
Officials noted that the success of these initiatives has encouraged the Education and Sports Departments to plan similar activities across schools in the Islands. Future programmes will continue to emphasize gender equality, physical literacy, and the inclusion of students with special needs in mainstream sports.
Together, these two initiatives demonstrate how the Andaman & Nicobar Administration is transforming the educational and sporting landscape of the Islands, building an inclusive environment where every child, regardless of background or ability, can thrive through the power of participation, discipline, and teamwork.
