1.141 Kg Charas Found in Little Andaman Jungle During Intensive Anti-Drug Operation

Date:

A substantial cache of Charas (Hashish) was seized in Little Andaman on March 24, marking the largest drug recovery in the history of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The team of Police Station Hut Bay recovered a total of 1.141 kilograms, classified as a commercial quantity under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.

The seizure followed credible information received regarding illegal narcotic activity in the South Bay area. Acting on the tip, the team conducted a search operation in the adjoining jungle near the seashore, targeting locations identified in the intelligence. The operation included verification and oversight from local administrative authorities and independent witnesses to ensure procedural compliance.

During the intensive search, 1.141 kilograms of Charas was recovered and immediately seized under legal codal formalities. A case has been registered under Section 20(b)(ii)(C) of the NDPS Act against unknown persons, and further investigations are underway to trace the source and distribution network of the contraband.

The operation highlights ongoing enforcement measures against narcotic trafficking in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Residents are being urged to provide information about any suspected illegal activities to the team of Police Station Hut Bay via helplines 112, 03192-232100, 03192-236641, and 9531856080. Informants’ identities will remain confidential.

This incident underscores both the presence and circulation of commercial quantities of narcotic drugs in remote areas, emphasizing the need for vigilance and timely reporting. The team of Police Station Hut Bay continues to monitor regions across the islands to curb trafficking, with coordinated field operations aimed at disrupting illegal networks.

Officials stressed that public cooperation remains critical in addressing drug-related crimes. The recovered contraband is expected to undergo standard procedures for evidence collection and subsequent legal action, ensuring compliance with the NDPS framework.

The seizure is also indicative of broader trends in narcotic control across island territories, where geographical isolation does not prevent the movement or storage of illicit substances. The team is expected to expand surveillance and intelligence-gathering efforts to prevent recurrence and to trace channels of supply that reach the islands from mainland or maritime sources.

The case remains active, with follow-up investigations planned to identify those responsible and to dismantle any associated networks. Officials reaffirmed their commitment to enforcing the NDPS Act while maintaining transparency and legal adherence in all drug enforcement operations across the territory.
