Diglipur, April 30:
Aiming to empower vulnerable sections of society, the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) Project (Rural), Diglipur, held an awareness program at the Youth Club in Madhupur to educate elderly individuals and women about key emergency helpline services.
The event, held under the aegis of the Directorate of Social Welfare, focused on promoting the nationwide helpline numbers, 14567 for senior citizens, and 181 for women in distress. In addition, attendees were reminded of the general emergency numbers for Police (100) and Ambulance (102).
Addressing the gathering, Smt. Indira Devi, Child Development Project Officer (CDPO), highlighted the role of helplines in ensuring the safety and psychological well-being of elderly people and women, particularly in isolated and rural regions. “These helplines are lifelines. They connect vulnerable individuals with immediate support, counselling, and intervention,” she said.
The session included live demonstrations on how to dial and interact with helpline operators. Case studies were also shared to underscore how quick response through these numbers has saved lives and prevented abuse.
Participants were also educated on available social welfare schemes and how to access medical aid, legal advice, and counselling services via these helplines. IEC materials including brochures and contact cards were distributed for easy reference.
The event saw active participation from local women’s groups, Anganwadi workers, village elders, and youth volunteers. Many shared personal stories or challenges around seeking help during emergencies, highlighting the need for such awareness initiatives.
Organizers emphasized that spreading awareness about these numbers is just the first step. “Community vigilance and responsiveness are essential. Every call made in time can save a life,” said a member of the ICDS support team.
The program concluded with a call for continued public education, especially in rural and tribal belts where access to digital media is limited and word-of-mouth remains a powerful tool for awareness building.
