Sri Vijaya Puram, May 19:
In a significant move to enhance connectivity across the scattered islands of the Andaman & Nicobar archipelago, the Union Territory Administration has announced a major revision in the helicopter service schedule, increasing its frequency and reach. Starting May 22, 2025, Pawan Hans Limited (PHL) helicopters will operate an expanded network of sorties aimed at improving access to remote areas and supporting socio-economic development.
The helicopter service, introduced in 2003, has long served as a lifeline for island residents, playing a pivotal role during medical emergencies, evacuations, and for general transportation where road or sea links are either non-existent or weather-dependent.
According to the revised schedule, PHL helicopters will now connect:
Campbell Bay via Car Nicobar – six days a week
Nancowry Group of Islands via Car Nicobar – six days a week
Direct sorties to Car Nicobar – six days a week
Hut Bay – six sorties a week
Swaraj Dweep and Shaheed Dweep – three sorties a week
Rangat – three weekly trips
Mayabunder and Diglipur – six weekly sorties
Additionally, the Indian Air Force will operate Dornier flights to Campbell Bay via Car Nicobar every Monday and Friday, offering crucial air support in sectors with limited access.
Officials said the revised schedule is a direct response to increasing demand for faster, safer, and more reliable travel between the islands. The increased frequency is also expected to bolster tourism, promote inter-island trade, and ensure timely medical evacuations from remote locations.
“The Administration is committed to strengthening last-mile connectivity across the islands, and the expanded helicopter services mark a major leap in ensuring timely transportation, especially for isolated and underserved communities,” said an official spokesperson.
The revised schedule reaffirms the Administration’s aim of making the archipelago’s transport system more inclusive, efficient, and disaster-resilient.
