A&N Sanctions Rs 4.50 Crore to Resurface Key Hawaghar–Corbyn’s Cove Road

The Andaman and Nicobar Administration has sanctioned Rs 4.50 crore for resurfacing the key road stretch connecting Hawaghar (Nayagaon) to Corbyn’s Cove, a project identified as critical for improving road infrastructure and traffic movement in South Andaman. The work is expected to commence shortly following completion of tendering procedures.

The Administration moved ahead with the sanction citing the deteriorating condition of the road and the need to complete repairs ahead of the approaching monsoon season. The Andaman Public Works Department (APWD) has been directed to expedite procedural requirements, including tender processing and award of work. According to the Administration, the tendering process has already been completed after financial approval was received.

Authorities have prioritised the project due to the strategic importance of the route, which functions as a secondary access corridor to the South Andaman region. The road serves as an alternative connection to the Secretariat and VVIP headquarters area from Chidiyatapu and Garacharma, making it a significant link for administrative access as well as general public movement.

The stretch also experiences considerable vehicular load, including regular movement of commercial vehicles transporting quarry materials. Officials have cited this heavy traffic as a major factor contributing to the road’s wear and deterioration, necessitating urgent resurfacing work to ensure safer and more efficient transport conditions.

The resurfacing project will involve laying Bituminous Macadam (BM) followed by Bituminous Concrete (BC) layers across approximately three kilometres of the road. These materials are intended to strengthen the road surface, improve durability and provide smoother riding conditions for commuters. The improvement is also expected to enhance traffic flow along the route.

Authorities have indicated that the work schedule has been aligned to ensure completion before the onset of the monsoon season. The Administration has emphasised minimising disruption to residents, businesses and regular traffic users during execution of the project.

The resurfacing initiative forms part of broader infrastructure maintenance efforts aimed at improving connectivity and road safety across the islands. Officials maintain that upgrading critical road links is essential to sustaining transportation efficiency, particularly in regions witnessing increasing traffic movement.

Improved road conditions along the Hawaghar–Corbyn’s Cove corridor are expected to support smoother commuting, facilitate commercial transport and enhance access to key administrative zones. The Administration has underscored that infrastructure strengthening remains a continuing priority to address growing mobility requirements across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The project is positioned as a targeted intervention to restore road quality, maintain transport reliability and reduce travel inconvenience caused by deteriorated surfaces. Completion before the monsoon is expected to help maintain uninterrupted connectivity in the region while ensuring safer travel conditions for road users.
