Joint Inspection Assesses Flood Damage, Plans Repairs At Guptapara

Zilla Parishad, APWD and Fisheries officials review infrastructure and jetty restoration

A joint inspection was conducted at Guptapara on January 22 to assess damage caused to government and private properties following recent floods, with officials reviewing the impact on infrastructure, residential areas and public assets. The inspection was led by the Adhyaksh of Zilla Parishad, South Andaman, and included participation from the Chief Engineer of the Andaman Public Works Department, along with his technical team and officials from the Department of Fisheries.

The inspection focused on evaluating the extent of damage across flood-affected areas, particularly to public infrastructure and essential facilities. Officials undertook site visits to understand the condition of roads, drainage structures and residential zones that were impacted by waterlogging and flooding. The assessment formed part of efforts to initiate coordinated remedial action and ensure timely restoration.

During the inspection, discussions were held on immediate and long-term measures required to mitigate flood risks in the area. Special emphasis was laid on restoration works and the strengthening of drainage systems to prevent recurrence of similar incidents. Officials also discussed the need to protect vulnerable locations and plan long-term flood management solutions that address both infrastructure resilience and environmental factors.

The inspection team also visited the Fish Landing Jetty at Guptapara, which sustained damage due to the floods. During the visit, it was decided to undertake immediate repair works to restore essential facilities at the jetty. These include repairs to the net binding shed, the concrete ramp and the diesel pump, along with other associated infrastructure. Dredging work was also identified as a priority to ensure smooth operations at the landing facility.

In addition to the Guptapara jetty, discussions were held regarding the resumption of operations at the non-functional Fish Landing Jetty at Wandoor. Officials examined the status of the facility and deliberated on the steps required to bring it back into operation, recognising its importance for the local fishing community and fisheries-related activities.

The Adhyaksh of Zilla Parishad, South Andaman, requested the concerned departments to prepare detailed estimates and proposals for undertaking the required developmental and restoration works on a priority basis. Emphasis was placed on ensuring effective coordination among all stakeholder departments to avoid delays and overlaps in execution.

The Chief Engineer, APWD, indicated that technical assessments would be expedited to facilitate the timely execution of proposed works. The technical team accompanying the inspection reviewed site conditions and gathered inputs necessary for preparing estimates related to infrastructure repair and flood mitigation measures.

Officials noted that the joint inspection reflects an integrated approach towards addressing flood-related damage through coordinated action among the Zilla Parishad and line departments. The focus remains on prompt assessment, planning and implementation of rehabilitation measures in areas affected by flooding.

The inspection also underscored the importance of sustainable development initiatives alongside immediate restoration. By combining short-term repairs with long-term planning for flood management, the administration aims to reduce vulnerability and improve resilience in flood-prone areas of South Andaman.

The outcomes of the inspection are expected to guide subsequent administrative and technical actions, with priority accorded to restoring essential services and infrastructure. The coordinated assessment is seen as a step towards ensuring effective rehabilitation and supporting the livelihoods of communities impacted by the recent floods.
