GST Team Holds Awareness Drive at Swaraj Dweep

Date:

The Union Territory Goods and Services Tax (UTGST) Department conducted a two-day GST Awareness Program at Swaraj Dweep from October 25 to 26, 2025, as part of its ongoing effort to promote tax compliance and assist local businesses in understanding GST regulations. The initiative was held under the guidance of Shri Arjun Sharma, Commissioner, UTGST, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, and led by Dr. Jatinder Sohal, Assistant Commissioner, UTGST, South Andaman.

During the program, the GST team interacted with a wide range of local business operators, including water sports companies, tour operators, hotels, and restaurants, which form a significant part of the island’s tourism economy. The team provided detailed briefings on the GST registration process, return filing procedures, and the financial and operational benefits of registering under the GST framework.

Participants were reminded that GST registration is mandatory for all eligible businesses as per the relevant Acts and Rules. The team emphasized that non-compliance could result in penalties and legal action, urging all business owners to complete their registration and ensure timely filing of returns to avoid enforcement measures.

The awareness program was aimed not only at improving compliance but also at clearing misconceptions about the GST system and guiding small entrepreneurs through the technical aspects of registration and filing. Officials underscored that GST compliance contributes to a fair and transparent business environment, while also enhancing the credibility and competitiveness of local enterprises, particularly in the tourism and hospitality sectors.

The UTGST Department announced that it will continue to hold similar awareness camps and enforcement drives across the islands in the coming months to ensure greater participation and understanding among business owners. The department also assured that it remains committed to helping traders, service providers, and other stakeholders achieve smooth GST compliance through timely assistance and public outreach.

Business owners seeking clarification or wishing to raise complaints or queries regarding GST can reach the UTGST Department via WhatsApp at 9595359698. The department reaffirmed that its officers will remain accessible for guidance and support during future awareness programs and enforcement activities.

With tourism-related businesses forming the backbone of Swaraj Dweep’s economy, the awareness program is seen as a crucial step in strengthening compliance and promoting responsible business practices across the islands.
