A structured effort to promote chess at the school level has begun with the formal inauguration of the Pawn to Queen Chess Club at Government Model Senior Secondary School (GMSSS), Sri Vijaya Puram. The initiative is aimed at nurturing student interest in the game through systematic training, regular practice sessions, and exposure to competitive platforms beyond the campus.
The club was launched on the school premises in the presence of students and teachers, marking the beginning of an organized approach to chess training within the institution. The programme is designed not only to introduce beginners to the fundamentals of the game but also to help interested students develop advanced skills required for inter-school and higher-level tournaments.
The inaugural move of the club was symbolically made on a chessboard by the school Principal, who played the ceremonial first move against S. Bhavishya, a Class VI student. The student has been identified as a promising chess player from the school. During the event, she was felicitated in recognition of her achievements in the sport, highlighting the school’s intention to encourage talent and create role models among students.
The establishment of the club reflects a growing emphasis on mind sports in educational institutions, where chess is increasingly seen as a tool to enhance concentration, analytical thinking, and decision-making abilities among students. By institutionalizing the activity through a dedicated club, the school aims to ensure continuity in training rather than limiting the game to occasional competitions or informal play.
According to the information shared during the launch, the club will offer structured coaching and regular practice opportunities. This is expected to create a disciplined environment where students can steadily improve their game while learning strategic thinking and patience — qualities closely associated with chess. The initiative also seeks to build a competitive spirit by preparing students to participate in tournaments at different levels.
Enrollment in the club has been opened to interested students of the school. Registration is being facilitated through the school system, allowing students to formally join the programme and take part in scheduled activities. Details related to enrollment and coordination are being handled by a designated school representative, ensuring that students and parents have a clear point of contact for information.
The move signals the school’s intent to integrate extracurricular intellectual activities into its broader development framework. By setting up a platform dedicated to chess, the institution is attempting to create a balance between academics, sports, and cognitive skill-building activities.
The club is expected to function as a hub for students with varying levels of experience, from beginners learning the basics to advanced players aiming for competitive exposure. With regular practice and mentoring, the initiative is positioned as a long-term effort rather than a one-time activity, focusing on building a sustained culture of chess within the school.
The launch also places GMSSS Sri Vijaya Puram among institutions in the region that are adopting structured models to promote mind sports at an early age. With training, recognition of talent, and opportunities to compete, the Pawn to Queen Chess Club is set to become a key extracurricular platform for students interested in the game.
