Free Chess Summer Camp Kicks Off Across Islands for Over 600 Students

Sri Vijaya Puram, May 5: The Department of Education launched its month-long Free Chess Summer Camp 2025 for students from Class I to VIII today. The program, designed to blend learning with recreation, began simultaneously across 18 venues covering nine educational zones of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, from Campbell Bay to Diglipur. The camp will continue until June 4, 2025.

The inaugural event was held at Government Senior Secondary School, Swaraj Dweep, where Shri Vikram Singh, Director of Education and Sports, ceremonially made the first move on the chessboard. Speaking at the event, he emphasized that chess improves mental discipline, enhances focus, and builds problem-solving skills among children.

More than 640 students have enrolled in the camp. Sessions are led by trained master trainers and include hands-on demonstrations, interactive learning, and friendly mini-tournaments. The camps are being held at the following venues: GMSSS Aberdeen and GSSS Manglutan (Sri Vijaya Puram Zone); GMSSS Ferrargunj and GSSS Wimberlygunj (Wimberlygunj Zone); GSSS Oralkatcha, GSSS Kadamtala, GSSS Rangat, and GMS Billyground (Rangat Zone); GMSSS Mayabunder, GSSS Pahalgaon, and GSS Mohanpur-5 (Mayabunder Zone); GSSS Subhashgram (Diglipur Zone); GMSSS Hutbay (Little Andaman); GSSS Swaraj Dweep and GSSS Shaheed Dweep; GSSS Malacca (Car Nicobar); GMS Kamorta (Nancowrie); and PM SHRI GSSS Campbell Bay (Campbell Bay Zone).
