The deadline for submitting applications under the fishing boat subsidy programme in South Andaman has been extended to July 15, 2025, offering more time for eligible fishers and unemployed youth to apply for financial support to purchase motorized or mechanized boats. The scheme, implemented under the UT Plan by the Zilla Parishad, South Andaman, is aimed at strengthening the local fisheries sector and generating livelihood opportunities.
Applications were initially invited with a deadline of June 23, 2025, but the administration has now officially extended the date to allow for wider participation. The scheme falls under the devolution of powers granted to local self-governments, empowering the Zilla Parishad to execute region-specific economic programmes in key livelihood sectors such as fisheries.
The initiative is open to licensed fishers, unemployed youth, fisheries cooperative societies, and local entrepreneurs involved in marine fishing activities. To facilitate access, the prescribed application forms and detailed guidelines are available across multiple collection points, including the Fisheries Sub-Stations in Campbell Bay, Hut Bay, Ferrargunj, and Panchayat Samiti offices in Prothrapur and other regions of South Andaman.
Applicants are required to fill out and submit their completed forms to the nearest Panchayat Office, the office of the Chief Executive Officer, or the respective Fisheries Sub-Stations before the new deadline. The guidelines are also made available on the official website of the Andaman & Nicobar Administration at www.andaman.gov.in.
The scheme reflects a strategic move by the local administration to modernise the fishing fleet and promote sustainable livelihood practices among the coastal population. Fishing remains one of the major sources of income in the islands, and access to better-equipped boats is seen as vital to ensuring both economic growth and safety at sea.
By targeting youth and existing licensed fishers, the administration seeks to encourage entrepreneurship in the fisheries sector while supporting community-based development models. The extended deadline is expected to allow for greater mobilisation of applicants from remote areas who may have initially missed the first window due to logistical constraints.
This initiative is in line with broader national goals to support blue economy efforts, particularly in maritime territories like the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Through the provision of motorized and mechanized boats, the programme aims to boost productivity, reduce manual labour, and enhance competitiveness among local fishers.
The Zilla Parishad has also been tasked with verifying the eligibility and authenticity of each application, ensuring that only genuine beneficiaries receive support. The inclusion of cooperative societies is designed to enable collective ownership and use, especially in smaller communities where individual ownership may not be feasible.
As part of decentralised governance, such schemes serve not only to deliver welfare benefits but also to engage citizens directly in economic decision-making. The administration has urged all interested and eligible candidates to utilise the extended time frame to complete their applications and submit them through the appropriate channels.
The extension also highlights the administration’s responsiveness to on-ground realities, acknowledging the need for greater outreach and accessibility in public welfare programmes. With the July 15 deadline now set, the coming weeks are expected to see a rise in footfalls at Panchayat and Fisheries Sub-Stations as word of the extension spreads across island communities.
