Mayabunder, April 28:
As part of heightened coastal preparedness, the North & Middle Andaman District Police have initiated a series of Fishermen Watch Group meetings in anticipation of the two-day “Sagar Kavach” coastal security exercise scheduled for April 30 and May 1, 2025.
These outreach efforts spanned all police station jurisdictions in the district and were aimed at sensitizing the fishing community about their crucial role in safeguarding the archipelago’s coastline. Officials reiterated that fishermen act as the first line of defense against coastal threats and urged them to maintain a watchful eye during their daily sea operations.
During the interactive sessions, fishermen were briefed on how to detect and promptly report suspicious vessels, unknown persons, or any irregular maritime activity. Police officers emphasized the need for immediate and direct communication with the nearest police stations and assured full confidentiality and support to anyone reporting intelligence inputs.
The exercise also involved educating the fishermen on the appropriate protocols for passing information, with a strong focus on real-time updates that can lead to swift preventive action. Police reiterated their commitment to supporting the fishing community while reinforcing the importance of public participation in maintaining a secure maritime environment.
These pre-exercise initiatives fall under broader community policing strategies designed to strengthen ties with local stakeholders and prevent any gaps in coastal surveillance.
The general public, including fishermen, have been encouraged to contact the police through helpline numbers 100, 112, and 03192-273344 with any information related to suspicious activity. Authorities have assured that informant identities will be kept confidential and rewarded where applicable.
The North & Middle Andaman District Police have reaffirmed their dedication to upholding maritime security and called on the continued cooperation of local residents and fishermen beyond the duration of the “Sagar Kavach” drill.
