Andaman Fisheries Museum Shut for Maintenance and Infrastructure Upgrade

The Fisheries Museum-cum-Aquarium in Sri Vijaya Puram will remain temporarily closed to visitors from March 16 to March 27 as the Directorate of Fisheries undertakes repair and renovation works aimed at improving safety standards and enhancing the overall visitor experience.

The Directorate of Fisheries of the Andaman and Nicobar Administration announced that the closure is necessary to carry out essential maintenance activities within the premises. The museum, which is a popular attraction for tourists, students and marine enthusiasts visiting the islands, will reopen once the renovation works are completed.

Officials stated that the temporary shutdown has been scheduled to facilitate structural repairs and improvements to infrastructure within the facility. These upgrades are expected to improve visitor safety while also strengthening the museum’s role in promoting marine awareness and sustainable tourism in the islands.

The Fisheries Museum-cum-Aquarium is one of the prominent public facilities managed by the Directorate of Fisheries in Sri Vijaya Puram. It houses displays of marine biodiversity found in the waters surrounding the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago, including preserved specimens of fish species, coral formations and other marine organisms native to the region. The aquarium section also provides visitors an opportunity to observe live marine species and learn about the rich underwater ecosystems that form an integral part of the islands’ natural heritage.

Over the years, the museum has become an educational resource for school and college students, researchers and tourists seeking to understand the marine environment of the islands. The exhibits highlight various aspects of fisheries resources, marine life diversity and traditional fishing practices followed in the region. The facility also supports awareness programmes related to marine conservation and sustainable fisheries management.

Officials said the ongoing renovation work is part of broader efforts to maintain public infrastructure associated with tourism and environmental education in the islands. Upgrading such facilities is considered important not only for improving visitor comfort but also for ensuring that exhibits are preserved properly and presented in a safe environment.

Authorities indicated that the temporary closure period will allow technicians and maintenance teams to complete the required repairs without disrupting visitor movement. Carrying out these works during a defined closure window is expected to ensure that renovation activities are completed efficiently and within schedule.

Once the work is completed, the Fisheries Museum-cum-Aquarium is expected to resume normal operations and reopen to visitors. The Directorate of Fisheries stated that the facility will continue to serve as an important centre for marine education and tourism promotion in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Visitors seeking further information about the closure or the reopening schedule may contact the Directorate of Fisheries at Sri Vijaya Puram through the official telephone number or email address provided by the department.

The administration noted that maintaining and upgrading such public institutions contributes to strengthening tourism infrastructure while supporting educational outreach related to marine biodiversity and fisheries resources in the region.
