Sri Vijaya Puram, April 25: Amid rising summer temperatures and an accompanying surge in electricity demand, the Electricity Department has issued an urgent advisory to residents of Sri Vijaya Puram and adjoining areas in South Andaman, urging them to curb electricity usage during evening peak hours to avoid possible power curtailments.
The advisory, released on Friday, comes in response to a significant shortfall in power supply observed between 5:30 PM and 10:30 PM, a period now identified as the evening peak load window. Officials noted that the growing use of energy-intensive appliances, especially air conditioners and motors, has led to a temporary but pressing strain on the power grid.
To manage the situation effectively, consumers have been asked to use electricity judiciously, especially by avoiding major power-guzzling appliances such as air conditioners (ACs), water motors, ovens (OTGs), geysers, and garden lighting during the evening hours. Households have also been encouraged to switch off unnecessary appliances when not in use to help stabilize the load on the system.
“This cooperation will go a long way in ensuring uninterrupted power supply to all areas without the need for power cuts,” the department stated. Officials emphasized that the situation is being actively monitored, and random checks may be conducted to ensure that Demand Side Management (DSM) protocols are being followed by consumers.
While the advisory is temporary, the department has not ruled out further measures if consumption patterns do not improve. The appeal comes at a time when temperatures across the Andaman region have seen a marked increase, leading to heightened dependence on cooling devices.
The Electricity Department reiterated its commitment to maintaining stable power supply across the region and called on the public to support the effort by making small adjustments in their daily power usage routines.
Residents can expect further updates if the situation evolves or if power curtailment becomes unavoidable. For now, voluntary energy conservation during peak hours remains the most effective way to balance the grid and avoid outages.
