Parties flag issues as roll revision enters key phase

A review meeting involving representatives of all recognised political parties was held in Sri Vijaya Puram as part of the ongoing Special Intensive Revision of the Electoral Roll-2026 in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The meeting was convened by the Electoral Roll Observer to oversee the claims and objections process following the publication of the draft electoral roll on December 23, 2025.

The meeting was attended by Assistant Electoral Registration Officers of South Andaman district and aimed at ensuring transparency, cooperation and smooth execution of the revision exercise as mandated by the Election Commission of India. The focus remained on strengthening coordination between election authorities and political stakeholders during a critical phase of the revision process.

During the interaction, election officials briefed the political party representatives on key timelines related to filing of claims and objections, the schedule for hearings, and the process leading up to the final publication of the electoral roll. The roadmap for the notice and hearing phase was outlined, with emphasis on adherence to procedures laid down by the Election Commission of India.

Officials also presented details of the activities undertaken during the enumeration phase of the revision, including verification carried out by Booth Level Officers and supervisory checks conducted at various levels. The steps taken to ensure accuracy and completeness of voter data during field verification were explained as part of the overview.

Data relating to mapped and unmapped electors was shared with political party representatives, along with the status of forms received after the publication of the draft electoral roll. The presentation covered applications submitted for inclusion, correction and deletion, providing parties with an overview of the progress made since the draft roll was placed in the public domain.

Representatives of recognised political parties shared their feedback and observations on the draft electoral roll during the meeting. Issues raised by the parties were noted by the election authorities as part of the consultative process envisaged under the revision exercise. The exchange was aimed at identifying potential gaps and ensuring that genuine electors are not left out of the final roll.

The Electoral Roll Observer assured participants that cooperation would be extended and that all required actions would be taken strictly in accordance with the guidelines issued by the Election Commission of India. The assurance was intended to reinforce confidence in the impartiality and procedural integrity of the revision exercise.

The Special Intensive Revision is being carried out to update and refine the electoral roll through systematic verification, correction of errors and inclusion of eligible voters. The process is particularly significant in the island territory, where migration, remote habitation and logistical challenges can affect voter enumeration.

The meeting concluded with a collective commitment from election officials and political party representatives to ensure that the revision process remains smooth, transparent and accurate. Authorities reiterated that the claims and objections phase plays a crucial role in improving the quality of the electoral roll before its finalisation.

Election officials have continued to urge citizens and political stakeholders to actively participate in the revision process within the prescribed timelines, stating that broad participation and oversight are essential for maintaining the credibility of the electoral roll in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.Parties flag issues as roll revision enters key phase
