The Election Commission of India (ECI) has extended the deadline for filing claims and objections in the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Uttar Pradesh by one month, setting the new deadline as March 6, 2026. The revision exercise also includes the Andaman and Nicobar Islands among 12 states and Union Territories undergoing similar electoral roll updates.
According to an official statement, the extension was granted at the request of the Uttar Pradesh government. The earlier window for submitting claims and objections was scheduled from January 6 to February 6, 2026. The final electoral roll for Uttar Pradesh is now scheduled for publication on April 10.
A notification issued by the Commission stated that the decision was taken after considering a request from the Chief Electoral Officer of Uttar Pradesh and other relevant factors. Exercising powers under the proviso to Rule 12 of the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960, the Commission extended the claims and objections period up to March 6, 2026, with January 1, 2026, retained as the qualifying date for the revision.
As per the revised timeline, the notice phase, decisions on enumeration forms, and disposal of claims and objections are to be completed by March 27. Subsequent verification of health parameters is scheduled to conclude by April 3, ahead of the final roll publication on April 10.
The extension comes in the context of the next Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, expected to be held in February–March 2027 to elect 403 legislators. The ongoing revision exercise is aimed at updating electoral rolls well ahead of the poll schedule.
The Commission’s communication to the Chief Electoral Officer of Uttar Pradesh referenced earlier correspondence dated October 27, 2025, and December 30, 2025, regarding the Special Intensive Revision process. Under Secretary Sandeep Kumar stated in an official letter that the revised schedule was based on consideration of the state’s request dated February 2, 2026, along with other relevant factors.
Significantly, the Special Intensive Revision is not limited to Uttar Pradesh. The Commission had announced the exercise on October 27, 2025, across 12 states and Union Territories. These include the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Madhya Pradesh, Puducherry, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal.
For the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, inclusion in the nationwide revision process places the Union Territory within the broader electoral updating exercise undertaken periodically by the Commission. Such revisions are intended to maintain the accuracy of electoral rolls with reference to the designated qualifying date.
The Commission has not announced any separate schedule changes for other participating states and Union Territories. The extension currently applies specifically to the Uttar Pradesh revision timeline, while the overall nationwide revision framework continues as previously notified.
The Special Intensive Revision remains a routine electoral administrative exercise aimed at updating voter lists through claims, objections, verification processes and final publication of rolls in accordance with established electoral procedures.
