Sri Vijaya Puram (Port Blair), April 11: A mock drill on earthquake and fire safety was conducted at Government Senior Secondary School (GSSS), Oralkatcha in Baratang on April 10, involving 254 participants, including students and staff, as part of the School Safety Programme.
Firefighters from Fire Station Baratang carried out the exercise to train participants in emergency response and disaster preparedness within a school environment. The drill aimed to familiarise students and staff with coordinated response actions during natural disasters and fire-related incidents.
During the session, firefighters briefed participants on standard emergency protocols, including the R.A.C.E and P.A.S.S techniques used in fire safety management. The demonstration focused on practical understanding of how to respond effectively in crisis situations.
The drill simulated an earthquake alert, prompting students to practice the “Duck-Cover-Hold” method as an immediate safety response. This was followed by a controlled fire evacuation exercise, where participants moved systematically to a designated assembly point under supervision.
Firefighters also demonstrated the use of portable fire extinguishers, explaining their operation and safety precautions. Students were given hands-on experience in handling the equipment, allowing them to apply the techniques demonstrated during the session.
Officials stated that such drills are part of ongoing efforts to enhance preparedness and ensure that students and staff can respond promptly and safely during emergencies. The structured exercise enabled participants to understand evacuation routes, safety measures and coordinated actions required during disasters.
The programme concluded with an interactive session where firefighters addressed queries related to fire safety and disaster preparedness. Participants engaged in discussions to reinforce their understanding of emergency protocols and risk mitigation strategies.
The initiative forms part of a broader effort by the Andaman and Nicobar Fire and Emergency Service to strengthen disaster readiness in educational institutions across the islands. Authorities emphasised that regular mock drills are essential in building awareness and ensuring preparedness among young students and school staff.
The exercise at GSSS Oralkatcha highlighted the importance of practical training in disaster response, with officials reiterating their commitment to promoting safety awareness and preparedness at the community level.
