In a step aimed at strengthening the digital backbone of the justice system in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, an e-Sewa Kendra was inaugurated at the District Court Complex, Sri Vijaya Puram, on Tuesday. The centre was opened by Justice Sabyasachi Bhattacharyya, Judge, High Court, Calcutta, and Zonal Judge for A&N Islands, in the presence of the Registrar, District and Sessions Judge, judicial officers, representatives of the Bar Association, and officials from the A&N Administration and APWD.
The initiative is part of a wider effort to make judicial services more accessible to litigants, lawyers, and the general public by introducing digital tools that streamline case management and legal processes. The facility, equipped with user-friendly kiosks and computer terminals, is expected to help those with limited access to technology or digital literacy by acting as a single-point service platform for court-related needs.
Inaugurating the centre, Justice Bhattacharyya spoke about the necessity of such digital systems in the judiciary, highlighting that the facility was established in accordance with directions from the Supreme Court of India to strengthen e-governance in courts. He urged users to fully utilize the services available through the centre and also shared suggestions for improving its design and operations. His remarks underscored the judiciary’s commitment to ensuring efficiency, transparency, and convenience through technology.
District and Sessions Judge Sudhir Kumar said the new facility represents a major step forward in the island judiciary’s ongoing efforts to make justice more accessible. He noted that for many people living in remote parts of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, accessing court information or filing documents online had been challenging due to connectivity issues or lack of digital familiarity. The e-Sewa Kendra, he said, bridges this gap by providing direct assistance for filing, case information, e-Mulakat, digital documentation, and online payments.
The centre’s services will include case status inquiries, e-filing, document scanning and uploading, online payments, and mobile app assistance, among others. It will also provide facilities for virtual interactions with legal authorities and offer guidance on accessing online legal resources.
Representatives from the Bar Association, Sri Vijaya Puram, welcomed the initiative, noting that it would simplify day-to-day operations for advocates and litigants alike. They encouraged maximum use of the system to ensure that the benefits of digitization reach every corner of the judiciary.
The e-Sewa Kendra initiative forms part of the national e-Courts Mission Mode Project, designed to digitize court processes across India. By integrating technology into judicial administration, the project aims to promote efficiency, reduce paperwork, and ensure real-time access to justice.
The Andaman & Nicobar Islands judiciary, through the launch of this facility, joins the expanding network of e-Sewa Kendras across India that are helping to modernize the justice delivery framework. Each of these centres acts as a bridge between the court and the citizen, ensuring that no litigant is left behind due to lack of technological resources.
The inauguration ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks by Chief Judicial Magistrate Samrat Roy, who appreciated the participation of judicial officers, advocates, and administrative officials in realizing this effort. The establishment of the e-Sewa Kendra at Sri Vijaya Puram marks another milestone in the digitization of judicial services, offering a more transparent and inclusive system for litigants across the islands.
