The North and Middle Andaman Police cracked down on illegal narcotics activity in Diglipur after a cannabis plant was seized from a residence in Gandhi Nagar during an intelligence-led raid. A 63-year-old resident was arrested following the recovery, marking another enforcement action under the district’s ongoing anti-narcotics drive.
According to officials, the operation was launched on 7 November after PS Diglipur received reliable inputs indicating the presence of an illicitly cultivated ganja plant. Acting on the tip-off, a raiding team led by Inspector Vijay Kumar, Station House Officer of PS Diglipur, carried out a targeted search at the suspect’s property. The effort was supported by officers from the station and supervised by the Sub-Divisional Police Officer of Diglipur, Ankesh Yadav.

During the search, the team found a single cannabis plant, weighing around 102 grams, hidden behind a betel leaf patch within the premises. Police said the accused, identified as Amar Das of Ward 1, Gandhi Nagar, admitted to cultivating the plant for personal consumption and for occasionally supplying small quantities to acquaintances.
He was arrested on the spot, and a case under the relevant provisions of the NDPS Act has been registered at PS Diglipur. The plant was seized as evidence and sent for procedural examination as part of the investigation.
Police officials said the action reflects the department’s continued focus on preventing narcotics-related activities in the district. They emphasised that even small-scale cultivation or possession invites strict legal consequences under national narcotics laws.
The district police reiterated that efforts to maintain a drug-free environment will continue through intelligence gathering, community participation and sustained enforcement. They encouraged residents to report any suspicious activity or information about illegal substances to the nearest police station or the dedicated helpline numbers 100, 112 and 03192-273344. Authorities assured that the identity of informants would be kept confidential and could be rewarded for credible inputs.
The North and Middle Andaman Police stated that safeguarding the youth from substance abuse remains a priority as enforcement drives intensify across rural and urban pockets of the district.
