Mumbai, April 29: Dhurandhar, the high-octane spy thriller starring Ranveer Singh, is set to release in theatres across Japan on July 10, expanding its already massive global footprint after a record-breaking theatrical run.
The announcement was made by Jio Studios and B62 Studios through a collaborative social media post, sharing a Japan specific poster with the film’s title rendered in English alongside Japanese text. The caption read: “It’s time for Japan to experience the Dhurandhar energy! Arriving in theatres across Japan on 10.7.2026.”
Released globally on December 5, 2025, the first instalment of the duology has emerged as one of the biggest Indian film successes in recent years, grossing over Rs 1,328 crore worldwide. According to the makers, the film recorded a landmark international performance, becoming the highest-grossing Hindi film of all time in North America, while also setting records in Canada and Australia and ranking among the top-performing Indian films in the UK.
Directed by Aditya Dhar, the film blends espionage, action, and geopolitics into a fast-paced narrative centered on a covert counter terrorism operation. The story follows an undercover Indian intelligence agent who infiltrates Karachi’s criminal syndicates and political networks in an attempt to dismantle a terror infrastructure targeting India.
The ensemble cast includes Akshaye Khanna, Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Rampal, R. Madhavan, Sara Arjun, Rakesh Bedi, Gaurav Gera, and Danish Pandor in pivotal roles.
The film’s success has also been attributed to its storyline, which draws loose inspiration from real-life geopolitical tensions and security challenges in South Asia. Its mix of action set pieces, intelligence operations, and political intrigue has resonated strongly with audiences both in India and overseas.
The second part of the duology, titled Dhurandhar: The Revenge, is expected to continue the narrative arc, with the protagonist delving deeper into cross border networks while confronting larger threats. The sequel is also expected to touch upon themes linked to the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, adding a layer of emotional and historical context to the franchise.
Backed by Jio Studios and produced by Jyoti Deshpande and Lokesh Dhar under B62 Studios, the franchise represents a growing trend of large-scale Indian productions targeting global audiences with high production values and internationally relevant themes.
The Japan release marks another significant step in that direction, as Indian films continue to find new markets in East Asia. With its strong box office track record and action driven storytelling, Dhurandhar is expected to draw considerable attention from Japanese audiences, further cementing its status as a global blockbuster.
As the film gears up for its Japan debut, industry observers will be watching closely to see whether it can replicate its international success in yet another key overseas market.
