Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, while addressing a group of meritorious tribal students from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in New Delhi on Thursday, urged them to contribute towards making India one of the most powerful nations in the world.
The 30 higher secondary students, selected for their academic excellence, are currently in the national capital under the “Aarohan: Dweep to Delhi” programme, a seven-day National Integration Tour organised by the Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC). Their visit coincides with the Independence Day celebrations, where they are scheduled to witness the ceremonial flag hoisting at the Red Fort on August 15.
During the interaction at South Block, the Defence Minister encouraged the students to cultivate confidence, remain fearless in the face of challenges, and uphold human values. He underscored that strength alone cannot build a nation, character and values are equally important. “Human values are the foundation of character. Along with academic achievements, students must remain deeply rooted in them,” Singh told the visiting delegation.
Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan and Chief of Integrated Defence Staff Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit were also present during the session. Both senior officers welcomed the students and highlighted the opportunities such initiatives create for the youth of remote regions.
The students marked the occasion by presenting the Defence Minister with a traditional handcrafted souvenir from the Islands, reflecting the craftsmanship of tribal artisans. Singh appreciated the gesture and commended the cultural pride carried by the younger generation.
The Aarohan tour has been designed to provide exposure to students from remote island communities to India’s rich cultural heritage, modern infrastructure, and academic opportunities. As part of the itinerary, the students will visit significant historical and cultural sites including the Red Fort, India Gate, National War Memorial, and Taj Mahal. They will also interact with scholars and faculty at premier institutions like Delhi Technological University and the National Science Centre.
Officials said the programme reflects the Government’s continued emphasis on national integration, with a special focus on empowering future leaders from the Islands. By enabling students to experience the country’s diverse heritage and advancements first-hand, the initiative seeks to inspire them to contribute meaningfully to the nation’s progress.
The Defence Minister, in his closing remarks, wished the students success in their academic and personal journeys. He reiterated that the strength of India lies not only in its defence capabilities but also in the vision, confidence, and values of its youth.
The Aarohan initiative, supported by Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff, HQ Delhi Area, and the Civil Administration of the Islands, has been welcomed as a unique bridge between the remotest island communities and the national mainstream.
As the students prepare to be part of the Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort, the visit is expected to leave a lasting impression, offering them both motivation and broader exposure to opportunities beyond the Islands.
