Andaman Civil Supplies to Pause Services for Annual Physical Stock Check Exercise

Date:

All transactions under the Department of Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs will remain suspended for a week later this month as part of its annual physical verification exercise of storage facilities across the Union Territory. The department has announced that the verification drive will be conducted from March 25 to March 31, 2026, during which routine operations at godowns and Public Distribution Centres (PDCs) will be temporarily halted.

The annual verification process is a standard administrative measure aimed at assessing stock positions, ensuring accountability, and maintaining transparency in the management of essential commodities distributed through the public distribution system. By physically verifying stock levels, authorities seek to reconcile records with actual inventory and identify any discrepancies that may arise during the course of the year.

Officials indicated that the suspension of transactions during this period is necessary to allow for an uninterrupted and accurate verification process. The exercise typically involves detailed inspection of food grain stocks and other essential items stored across various locations, along with cross-checking documentation and supply records maintained by the department.

The move is expected to impact beneficiaries and stakeholders who rely on regular transactions at fair price shops and PDCs. However, the department has issued prior intimation to minimise inconvenience and allow individuals to plan their purchases accordingly. Stakeholders, including ration card holders and supply chain operators, have been advised to take note of the temporary halt in services.

The annual physical verification is considered a critical component in maintaining the integrity of the public distribution system. It ensures that stock movement is properly recorded and that supplies intended for beneficiaries are accurately accounted for. Such exercises also help in identifying systemic gaps, if any, and strengthening mechanisms to prevent leakages or irregularities.

In addition to stock verification, the process may also involve reviewing storage conditions, checking for compliance with prescribed standards, and assessing the overall efficiency of distribution channels. These checks are particularly important in geographically dispersed regions like the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, where logistics and supply management pose unique challenges.

The department’s decision to suspend transactions reflects the scale and intensity of the verification exercise, which requires focused attention from personnel across multiple locations. By temporarily pausing routine operations, officials can carry out the verification in a systematic manner without disruptions caused by ongoing distribution activities.

While such suspensions may cause short-term inconvenience, they are generally seen as necessary for ensuring long-term efficiency and transparency in public service delivery. Regular audits and verification exercises play a key role in maintaining trust in the system, particularly for schemes that cater to essential needs such as food security.

The department has urged the public to cooperate during the verification period and assured that normal services will resume promptly after the completion of the exercise on March 31. The resumption is expected to restore regular supply operations without delay.

With the verification exercise covering multiple godowns and centres across the Union Territory, the coming week is likely to see coordinated efforts by officials to complete the process within the stipulated timeline.
